Lethbridge, AB – The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 10, 2019

Female Athlete of the Week:

Asnate Fomina – Women’s Basketball

Leading the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s basketball team to a place they have not been in 24 years, fourth-year guard Asnate Fomina paced the Pronghorns to a road playoff sweep of the Alberta Pandas and a berth in the Canada West semi-finals.

In the series opener, the Latvian national scored a game high 22 points to lead the Pronghorns to a convincing 90-66 win over the Pandas. She also added seven assists, three rebounds and two steals to her Thursday night stats line.

The next night the NCAA transfer and masters student poured in another 17 points, including a perfect 4-4 from behind the arc as the Pronghorns completed the upset sweep of the Pandas with a 67-60 win. She also had another six assists Friday night.

Moving on to the Canada West semi-finals for the first time since 1995, the Pronghorns travel to Saskatoon to face the conference top seeded Saskatchewan Huskies in a best-of-three series starting Thursday night.

Male Athlete of the Week:
Garret Hughson – Men’s Hockey

In the program’s first playoff appearance in six seasons, fourth-year goaltender Garret Hughson did his part to try to upset the U SPORTS fifth ranked Calgary Dinos, stopping 58 of the 66 shots he faced in the Pronghorns Canada West quarterfinal loss.

Friday night in the series opener, the Foremost, Alberta product turned aside 30 of 34 Dinos shots and kept the Pronghorns within striking distance late into the third period. With an empty net goal in the final minute the Pronghorns dropped a 5-1 decision.

With the team’s back against the wall, Hughson was again solid in the Pronghorns crease, taking the Dinos to double overtime before being eliminated from the Canada West playoff picture with a 4-3 loss. He made another 28 saves on Saturday.

Hughson and his Pronghorn teammate now shift their focus to preparations for the 2019 Cavendish University Cup that will be hosted by the University of Lethbridge. The Pronghorns will play in the second quarterfinal Thursday March 14th at 7:00 p.m. against a yet to be determined opponent.
