CALGARY – Two goals each by Reid Jorgensen and Brock Nixon lifted the No. 10 University of Calgary Dinos to a 5-1 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
Strong first and third periods were the difference for Calgary as they played arguably their best game of the season.
The special teams for the Dinos were very strong, with the power play finishing the evening at 50 per cent and notching three goals, while penalty kill turned away all seven attempts while also netting a shorthanded marker in the final frame.
Despite the end result, Scott Bowles had a good night in between the pipes for the Pronghorns. The fifth-year netminder made 31 saves and saved it from being a more lopsided score.
The Dinos jumped out to a quick start two minutes into the first period. Dylan Hood was set up down low when he fired a shot from the right side of the net. Bowles made the initial stop, but Jorgensen was on the doorstep to put in the rebound and make it 1-0.
A game misconduct to Ryan Pottruff would send him to the showers early after he was called for a knee on the Dinos’ Hood. This set up a five-minute power play for Calgary which they converted on. Hood returned to the game in the second period.
While on the man advantage, Nixon sent a shot from the blue line wide. As the puck bounced back off the end boards, Walker Wintoneak found himself with a tap-in for his second of the campaign at 7:13.
Only 20 seconds later, Nixon broke in on the right side and skated into the slot where he beat Bowles with a quick wrist shot through the five hole. The tally gave Nixon three on the season.
The long power play and first period dominance by the Dinos saw them hammer 16 straight shots on the Pronghorn goaltender.
After an offensively one-sided opening frame, the game tightened up in the second period. It wasn’t until 15 minutes in that Lethbridge registered their first shot of the period; on their second, the Pronghorns got on the score sheet. A smooth pass by Winston Day Chief found Justin Hollinger jumping in front the point as he scored his first of the year at 17:09.
The Dinos padded their lead in the third period as they put the game out of reach. Jorgensen and Nixon each notched their second of the match to round out the scoring.
Calgary outshot Lethbridge in the game 36-12. The Dinos were 3-for-6 on the power play, while the Pronghorns were 0-for-7.
The Dinos and Pronghorns complete this two-game set tomorrow night as they travel to Lethbridge.
