Lethbridge – Marred in a seven game losing streak, the Lethbridge Pronghorn
men’s hockey team (2-4-1 CW, 2-8-1 overall) looks to return to the win column hosting the Regina Cougars (3-6-1 CW).
This weekend also marks the ‘Horns second annual Movember game in support of the fight against Prostate Cancer with proceeds from a variety of activities being donated to Prostate Cancer Canada. The highlight item for the weekend’s event includes a raffle for an autographed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Edmonton Oilers jersey and a jersey auction of specially designed ‘Horns Movember Jerseys.
After playing Canada West leading Alberta Golden Bears to a pair of closes losses two weeks ago, the ‘Horns had a tough weekend on the road last week, being swept by the Manitoba Bisons and outscored 10-4 in the two losses.
With only four games remaining before the semester break and finding themselves at the bottom of the Canada West standings, the ‘Horns are in desperate need to string together some wins. After scoring the second most goals in the conference last season, the team has really struggled offensively this season, scoring a conference low 22 goals thus far. During the losing streak, a big contributor to the losses has been the ‘Horns anemic power play, only scoring twice in their last 35 attempts.
Captain Dustin Moore and sophomore Taylor Gal have combined for nearly half of the teams’ goals with five apiece, while Cass Mappin and Nick Hotson are the only other two ‘Horns who have scored more than once with three and two each.
On the other side, the Cougars have been inconsistently consistent to say the least; over the past three weekend series’ the Cougars have won each Friday night, before losing the next night including last weekend’s split with the Calgary Dinos. The Cougars won 4-1 before losing 6-1 the next night, and in each of their wins the Cougars have scored four or more goals before being held to two or less goals in each of the subsequent losses.
Former Regina Pat Matt Strueby leads the Cougars offensively with 11 points in 10 games and has already surpassed his total from last year where he registered 9 points in 26 games as a freshman.
Last season, these two teams split the season series with both teams winning in each other’s barn, but both of the Cougars wins required a shootout, while both of the ‘Horns wins came during regulation time.
Puck drops at 7:00pm Nicholas Sheran Arena both Friday and Saturday night. The games can also be watched at
