Lethbridge – Heading into the home stretch of the Canada West season, the
Pronghorn men’s basketball team (5-7 CW, 6-12 overall) host southern Alberta rival Calgary Dinos (4-8 CW) in the most important series of the season to date.
With only four weeks remaining, the ‘Horns are in a dog fight with three teams for the final playoff spot in the West Division. The ‘Horns are currently tied with the Brandon Bobcats for the final spot but the Dinos are only one game behind.
Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 8:00pm at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre; the games will also be webcast on
www.canadawest.tv, home of all Canada West webcasts.
Horns Need to make a push
Coming off two close losses in Edmonton last week, the ‘Horns need to get back to their winning ways if they are to make a return trip back to the post-season. If that is to happen, the ‘Horns will need to shore up the defensive end of the floor. On the season, they are ranked 8
th defensively but in three of their last four games they have allowed more points than the season average of 81.8.
Daryl Cooper continues to lead the conference’s 11
th ranked offense, scoring more than 16 points per game. The ‘Horns are averaging just under 80 points a night. Dominyc Coward had a stellar weekend last week in Edmonton, recording double-doubles in both games and is averaging 14.6 points and 8.7 rebounds on the season.
New Look Dinos
While the Dinos are 4-8 on the season, they are a completely different team from the first half of the season. After missing nearly one full calendar year the Dinos welcomed back point guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson. Ogungbemi-Jackson played in only three games last season and missed the first six games this season, but has paid immediate dividends, averaging 17.7 points since his return.
Huge offseason addition Boris Bakovic has also missed significant time for the Dinos due to injury but returned in the New Year. The senior post transferred from Ryerson University where he was an All-Canadian and led the nation in scoring his last three seasons. In his return the last two weeks, Bakovic has averaged 17.8 points. Completing the Dinos three headed monster, Tyler Fidler is also averaging more than 17 points a game for the 8
th ranked offence.
