Horns-Bisons Jockey for Playoff Positioning

1/25/2012 2:44:00 PM

Lethbridge – Coming off their first sweep of the Calgary Dinos in 12 years, the Pronghorn men’s basketball team (7-7 CW, 8-12 overall) will look to solidify their post-season position, hosting the Manitoba Bisons (8-6 CW).

With two wins versus the Dinos last weekend, the ‘Horns moved back to .500, two games clear of the Brandon Bobcats for the final playoff spot, and just one game behind the Bisons for third in the Prairie Division.

Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 8:00pm at the 1st Choice Savings Centre; the games will also be webcast on www.canadawest.tv, home of all Canada West webcasts.

Horns Looking up
With only six games remaining in the conference schedule, four of which are on home court, the ‘Horns firmly control their own destiny. After hosting the team directly ahead of them this weekend, the ‘Horns will travel to Brandon next weekend to face the team directly behind them.

First-year Pronghorns Daryl Cooper and Dominyc Coward lead the ‘Horns eighth ranked offence with 15.4 and 14.7 points respectively, but the ‘Horns received some secondary scoring last weekend. After missing nearly 2 full years due to transfer rules and injury, local product Julian Spear Chief-Morris had his best weekend in a ‘Horns jersey last weekend. Spear Chief-Morris scored 19 points last Friday night and kick-started the ‘Horns offense with four three-pointers in the first half.

Defensively, the ‘Horns are ranked 8th in the conference allowing 81 points per game.  They had a strong performance last weekend, holding the Calgary Dinos under their season average both nights, but will be tested this weekend versus the top ranked offense in the conference.

Run-and-Gun Bisons
Only a week ago, the Bisons were the hottest team in Canada West, the winners of six straight, but they were beaten twice last weekend at home by a pair of national ranked teams in the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds.

The Bisons are a run-and-gun team in its truest sense, with the top ranked offense in the conference, but are ranked 13th defensively as well. Lead by Kurtis Sansregret, the Bisons balanced attack averages more than 87 points a night. Sansregret is averaging 14.6 points per game, and five other Bisons are averaging more than nine points per game.
