Lethbridge – In a rare opportunity to earn four points in a single evening, the Saskatchewan Huskies did just that to open the second half of the season with a pair of victories over the Lethbridge Pronghorns, 4-3 in overtime and 5-2 in the regularly scheduled game
An unexpected Zamboni malfunction on October 1
st, 2011 meant the game would be suspended after two periods of play with the Huskies leading 3-0 and, tonight, the two teams completed the re-scheduled third period, prior to the start of the January 6
th scheduled game.
Boxscore (Oct. 1st)
Kyle Ross, Derek Hulak and Brennan Bosch scored for the Huskies way back in October.
The ‘Horns took advantage of a rusty Huskie squad scoring three power play goals in the third, all from the stick of Captain Dustin Moore to record a natural hat trick in just over 6 minutes of play, forcing overtime.
Not to be outdone, Huskie captain Ross would play hero for his team, banging home a rebound past Horns goaltender Scott Bowles early into the first overtime session, while on a power play of their own.
Brent Henke released a long wrister from just inside the blue line that was quickly redirected by Moore in front of the net, to get the Horns on the board only three minutes in.
The ‘Horns would strike again under three minutes later as Henke and Moore combined their efforts yet again for another power play goal.
Moore completed the Horns comeback with another redirection, again off a Henke shot. Taylor Gal also assisted on all three Moore goals.
After a heated period of play, extra time was needed to settle the score. After successfully killing a hometown power play, Ross finally ended the contest just over two minutes in to the extra frame.
After a brief intermission and warm-up, the regularly scheduled game got underway.
Boxscore (Jan. 6th)
Riding the momentum of the overtime win 25-minutes earlier, Kyle Bortis beat Bowles early into the first period to get the Huskies on the board.
A great follow up effort by Andrew Bailey earned the visiting team their second of the contest, as he managed to lift a loose puck and over Bowles’ blocker side.
Dan Iwanksi would answer for the ‘Horns with under a minute remaining in the first frame; firing a hard wrister top shelf past Holfeld to bring his team within one heading into the break.
Just past the halfway mark in the second period the Huskies restored their two-goal lead as Kaye notched his 7th of the season.
Looking to complete the rare four point night the Huskies took the play to the ‘Horns in the third period peppering Bowles with 24 shots in the final frame but were not rewarded until late in the third period with a pair power play goals .
Matt Delahey blasted a shot from high in the slot while on a two man-advantage and Bosch, too, found the back of the while the ‘Horns remained shorthanded.
.
Lethbridge’s Nick Hotson would add a late power play goal of his own to cut the game to 5-2 but that is as close as the ‘Horns would get.
With the two wins the Huskies improve to 13-2-2 on the season, while the ‘Horns do move to within in one point of the Regina Cougars for the final playoff spot but fall to 3-11-3.
The ‘Horns and Huskies complete the season series tomorrow night. The puck drops at Nicholas Sheran Arena at 7:00pm and the game will also be webcast at
