The Pronghorns came out strong in the first, putting pressure on Mucha early and unloading shots from all angles. Their aggressive play helped to build some momentum in the first half of the period.
That momentum would be short-lived, however. In what was truly an odd occurrence, an unlucky bounce for the ‘Horns led the opening goal 12:40 into the opening period. With Lethbridge’s Ketlo on the bench for an extra attacker during a delayed Golden Bear penalty, a ‘Horns forward sent a wayward pass back to the point, missing the intended mark, and banking off the side boards on a perfect angle, sending the puck into the open net.
With a deflated ‘Horns team still trying to recover from that bizarre goal, the Golden Bears would notch two more before the first buzzer rang. A hard rush into the slot opened the door for Ringrose to put his wrister away, his fourth of the season, at 18:51 and in the dying seconds of the frame Barteaux came flying into the Horns’ end and unloaded a rocket from just inside the blue line that went off the post and top shelf past an unsuspecting Ketlo.
Outshot 16-7 in the first, the ‘Horns looked to even the score in the second. As tension mounted quickly the Golden Bears would strike again, just past the six minute mark, as Ferguson earned his first goal of the season, unassisted, as his carefully executed wrap-around snuck past the Lethbridge keeper, bringing the tally to 4-0.
Before the second frame was out, Rachinski added to the Bears lead, streaking off the half boards and beating Ketlo under the arm, far side.
Despite a few great chances by the ‘Horns, including a close rebound attempt by Tyler Skauge, the ‘Horns couldn’t crack Mucha through 40 minutes.
The Golden Bears would notch their sixth goal nearing the midway point of the third, as Rodgers fed a hard one-timer to Ferguson who made no mistake from close in.
Lethbridge net-minder Dylan Tait relieved, after Koper added to the Bears lead late in the frame, earning his second of the season.
Desperately trying to avoid a shutout, a late hustle by the ‘Horns earned them their lone goal of the night at 15:38 as Shaeber dangled from his forehand to backhand, placing the puck past a down and out Mucha. Not only did it spoil Mucha’s shutout but it ended his bid for the game-winning goal as well.
With the win the Bears improve to 4-3-0 and snap a three game losing streak. For the ‘Horns, they are still in search of their first win of the season and fall to 0-6-1.
These same two teams face off tomorrow night at Nicholas Sheran Arena, puck drop goes at 7:00pm.
