Lethbridge – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns deliver four unanswered goals on route to their first win of the season, a 4-3 win, Friday night, against the Mount Royal University Cougars.
Lethbridge goals were scored by Chase Schaber, Devon Kalinski, Daniel Iwanski and Brent Henke.
Tyler Jewitt, Nathan MacMaster and Eric Galbraith earned markers for the Cougars.
Starting in net for the ‘Horns was Dylan Tait who faced 30 shots on the night. In net for the Cougars was Dalyn Flette who turned aside 41 of 45.
Jewitt opened the scoring for Mount Royal at 2:30, from Galbraith and Collister, finding a hole in Tait’s pads, beating the Lethbridge net-minder to put the Cougars up 1-0.
The Cougars came out strong offensively, making great plays and containing the home team to their end for the first half of the frame. Jesse Tresierra’s hard slapper from the point narrowly missed the back of the net, ringing off the blocker-side post and wide.
Killian Hutt tried to answer back for the ‘Horns midway through the first period but was stonewalled in close by the Cougars’ keeper.
Just as soon as the Lethbridge team was looking more confident offensively, the Cougars would strike again, widening the gap to two on the power play. The goal would be credited to MacMaster, his first of the season, at 19:42, as he managed to beat a down and out Tait.
Shots were even through one but the home team had some serious work to do in the second frame if they wanted to climb back from a two goal deficit. Rising to the occasion, the ‘Horns found their legs, managing to get shots off from all angles and keeping the pressure on Flette.
Breaking Flette’s chance at a road shutout, Henke notched his team’s first goal at 12:22, from Mappin, his high shot ricocheting off the keeper’s helmet and trickling down and over the line.
Thirty seconds later, with momentum in their favour, a turnover at the blue line gave Kalinski the opportunity to net his first marker of the season, again from Mappin, knotting things up at two’s.
As the third period got underway, both teams sought the elusive difference-maker. The ‘Horns, riding the momentum through the break, came out firing on all cylinders. A scramble for the loose puck in front of the Cougars’ net saw chance after chance denied before ‘Horns captain Iwanski managed to get a piece of the puck, lifting it up and over the keeper to give his team their first lead of the game.
Mounting an impressive comeback, the ‘Horns recorded their fourth unanswered goal a few minutes later. Winning the draw to the right of the keeper, Schaber dangled his way around Flette and netted his fourth of the season.
Mount Royal would add another goal late in the frame but it wouldn’t be enough. The ‘Horns held on for the first regulation win of the season.
With this win, the Pronghorns improve to 1-9-1 while the Cougars fall to 2-11-0 (CW).
