Box Score EDMONTON – For the second-straight night, the University of Alberta Golden Bears lit it up downtown, draining double-digit treys to pace the home team to an 80-58 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.
Stalwart guard Kenneth Otieno and prolific Sahr Saffa led the three-point brigade, each with a trio from beyond the arc, with Lethbridge native Otieno finishing the game just short of a double-double, amassing 19 points and nine rebounds. Fourth-year guard Jordan Baker, who notched his 500
th defensive career rebound as a Bear in Friday’s match, had a game-high 20 points to go with nine boards of his own. Fourth-year forward Todd Bergen-Henengouwen also chipped in 14 points for the home squad.
Cleaning the glass nine times for the visitors, senior forward Derek Waldner also had a team-high 19 points for the Pronghorns, while Logan Reiter, hailing from Iron Springs, Alta., added a dozen.
Getting the calls from long-distance started early, Baker opening the scoring Saturday with a three-pointer from the corner and following with a long-bomb pass from his own end to Bergen-Henengouwen, staked out underneath the Lethbridge net for the easy lay-up and the 5-0 lead.
The Pronghorns would climb within one point to end the quarter 12-11, however, and most of the Alberta team struggled with the rock in the second, but Picture Butte, Alta. native Bergen-Henengouwen put up a dozen points in 10 minutes, shooting at 100% during play and 5-8 from the charity stripe to get the Bears entering halftime with a 34-24 lead.
The two provincial rivals then combined for a massive 53 points in the third quarter, each team shooting at more than 40% inside the paint and more than 70% at the line, but the 29-24 point advantage still kept Alberta with a healthy 15-point lead entering the final frame and with the Lethbridge offence turning cold in the remaining 10 minutes, the Golden Bears continued their solid work to close out the weekend sweep.
Next week, Prairie division-leading Alberta hosts the Pacific division leaders, the University of Victoria Vikes and University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, all three teams currently having identical 5-1 records. The 3-3 Pronghorns return home to face the 4-2 University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves and 2-3 Mount Royal Cougars in back-to-back games.
