Calgary, AB – Jessie Tresierra’s goal with 1:01 remaining in the second overtime Saturday lifted the Mount Royal University Cougars to a 3-2 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Canada West men’s hockey at Flames Community Arenas.
Eric Galbraith and Jeff Barrett scored the other Mount Royal (3-11-0) goals. Galbraith also set up Tresierra’s winner from behind the Lethbridge goal as the team’s played a five-minute, three-on-three session to follow an unproductive four-on-four period.
Chase Schaber and Brent Henke scored for Lethbridge (1-9-2). Henke’s goal with 2:02 remaining forced overtime.
It was the second game in a home-and-home series; the Pronghorns won 4-3 in Lethbridge on Friday.
The Pronghorns scored first Saturday with 3:29 remaining in the first period. Schaber got to the puck behind the Cougars goal, brought it out front and slid it past Dalyn Flette, stick side along the ice.
Galbraith tied the game with a nice goal at 5:13 of the second period, wristing a shot in the top corner from the left face-off circle.
Barrett tipped in Curtis Beech’s shot from the point at 7:48 of the third period to give Mount Royal a 2-1 lead but Henke one-timed a long pass from Schaber past Flette with time winding down.
Flette made 29 saves while Lethbridge’s Dylan Tait stopped 48 shots.
Prior to Saturday’s game Mount Royal University honoured their military history with an on-ice ceremony. The Cougars also wore throw-back jerseys that had poppies emblazoned on the front.
The school’s campus is built on the former site of the Number 3 Flying Training School for pilots. Since the institution’s founding in 1910, 28 members of the Mount Royal community have given their lives while serving Canada. The school remembers those service people with 28 military memorial bursaries, each in the name of a fallen soldier.
The Cougars are at home again Thursday, Nov.22 at 7 p.m. against city rival University of Calgary Dinos while Lethbridge heads to Saskatoon to face the Saskatchewan Huskies on Nov. 23-24.
