Lethbridge – Home floor continues to treat the Lethbridge Pronghorn men’s basketball well this season as they move to 5-1 at home with a dominating 93-73 win over the Mount Royal Cougars to complete the weekend sweep of the pair of first year Canada West schools.
Last night the ‘Horns downed the UNBC Timberwolves 99-90.
Leading the way for the ‘Horns offensive was Morgan Duce with 20 points and Julian Morris, who was perfect four-for-four in the opening half and finished with 16 points. A night after grabbing 17 rebounds, fifth-year post Derek Waldner finished with his second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 boards. For the Cougars, Nick Loewen led all scorers with 22 points, while Awet Abraha was the only other Cougar to hit double digits and he chipped in with 11.
“I am extremely happy with the way the team played this weekend as a whole,” said Head Coach Dave Adams. “UNBC is a good team and I think Mount Royal is a team on the upswing, we had to take care of business and we did just that.”
A weekend removed from struggling offensively, the Pronghorns for the second consecutive night showed the offensive prowess that had them atop the conference in points per games. Last weekend the ‘Horns failed to crack the 60 point mark in either game against the Alberta Golden Bears, despite averaging better than 91 points through their first four games.
Opening the game with a Chaz Johnson three, the ‘Horns were deadly from the floor early hitting over 54% from the field in the opening half scoring 27 and 31 points respectively in the first two quarters, building 58-39 lead by half time. Fourth-year guard Reiter had an exceptional opening half at both ends of the floor, scoring 13 points, six of which came off of three steals.
Even though their pace slowed after half time, the ‘Horns continued to score at a good clip scoring another 23 points and extending their lead to 81-56 after three quarters. With the game in hand the ‘Horns played their bench for large chucks of the final quarter and cruised to the 20 point victory.
With the win the ‘Horns improve to 5-3 and move into a tie with the Saskatchewan Huskies and Winnipeg Wesmen for second place in the Prairie Division. The Cougars fall to 2-6 on the season after tonight’s loss.
The ‘Horns will close out the first semester of conference action next weekend on the road heading to the West Coast to the Victoria Vikes and CIS third ranked UBC Thunderbirds. The Cougars will return home next weekend to host the Saskatchewan Huskies and the Prairie Division leading and 10
th ranked Alberta Golden Bears.
