Box Score CALGARY – A six-goal outburst in the second period spearheaded the University of Calgary Dinos to a 10-1 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Thursday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
The blowout victory improved the Dinos to 8-7-0 while the Pronghorns were dropped to (1-12-2).
“Tonight I thought we had a better commitment to team defence and as a result we generated better opportunities,” explained head coach Mark Howell. “It is tough anytime a score starts to get away from a team and that’s what happened to them midway through the second period.
“We kept talking about habits, making sure we didn’t turn over the puck, put it in good places and the third period we made sure to play good team defence,” added Howell.
After Lethbridge had applied much of the pressure in the early going, Calgary opened the scoring at the 8:30 mark of the first period. After an attempt by Cory Pritz was denied by Damien Ketlo, Luke Egener took a slap shot of his own from the left side which found the back of the net. The goal was Egener’s second of the campaign.
Just 40 seconds after the Dinos made it 1-0, the Pronghorns struck back with a fluky marker. First-year forward Killian Hutt fired an attempt towards from the left end boards on goal where it bounced off the skate of Dustin Butler and in for his third of the year.
While shorthanded at 11:50, Calgary regained the lead. Breaking in from the right side, Walker Wintoneak snipped a shot past the glove of Ketlo who was leaning far right on the play. Wintoneak’s goal was his seventh of the season and was the first shorthanded goal scored by a Dino in 2012-13.
With less than two minutes to go in the first, the Dinos extended their advantage to 3-1. While on a two-on-one, Ryan Gillen made a fantastic move then found Brooks Myers for his second of the season as the secondary scoring continued their recent stretch of success.
A scoring clinic occurred in the middle stanza as Calgary posted six goals while outshooting Lethbridge 16-4. The game remained 3-1 until the 10:50 mark as the Dinos’ top goal scorer Tyler Fiddler registered his ninth tally of the year from in front of the net.
“It has been a while,” said Fiddler when asked last time he was in a game similar to Thursday’s. “I can’t even recall the last time I was in a game with double digits.”
Over the next 10 minutes, the Dinos scored five more goals. Jesse Ismond started it with his first Canada West goal on the power play at the 13:08 mark. Wintoneak would pick up his second of the evening followed later by defenceman Giffen Nyren with his second of the season.
With under three minutes to go in the second period, Fiddler notched his second of the night and 10
th of the campaign. At the 19:41 mark, the 2011-12 Calgary leading scorer Taylor Stefishen scored his first of the season to round out the middle frame scoring.
Egener lit the lamp again for the lone goal of the third period to put the finishing touches on the score sheet at 3:12. The tally also marked the 40
th time Calgary had scored 10 or more goals in a contest. The last time the Dinos’ scored into double digits was Sept. 27, 2008 against the UBC Thunderbirds by the identical score of 10-1.
“They have a lot of pride in that locker room; they are probably a little embarrassed so we will expect their best effort on Saturday,” discussed Fiddler.
The Dinos and Pronghorns will wrap up this home-and-home set Saturday at the Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge with a 7 p.m. puck drop. After the conclusion of this series, Calgary will go on the Christmas break. The Dinos return to action in 2013 on Jan. 4-5 as they visit the UBC Thunderbirds. After the turn of the calendar, the Pronghorns will be in Regina to battle the Cougars from Jan. 4-5.
