Box Score Lethbridge - Anyone that watched the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Men’s basketball team’s season end last year, immediately started thinking about this season and how the team could avenge what was a controversial last second shot by the Fraser Valley Cascades that ended the ‘Horns’ playoff run. The team that rolled to a 95-78 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre looked like a team poised to build on the momentum created by last season.
“Tonight, we felt like we picked up where we left off last year,” said guard Morgan Duce, who led all scorers with 26 points. “We have most of our team back from last year and we have set high goals for ourselves this season.” Despite a third quarter lapse, the ‘Horns relied on contributions from most of their roster to come out with the 17 point win.
Led by Duce, five ‘Horns hit the score sheet in double figures, with Derek Waldner adding 14 and both Logan Reiter and Julian Spear Chief-Morris notching 13. Waldner also led all rebounders with nine. Steven Wesley added 16 in the Wesmen effort.
Though the ‘Horns maintained a double digit lead for most of the fourth quarter, the Wesmen would not go down without a fight and emotions ran high for both teams around a hard foul committed on Duce as he went up for a layup. Knocking down the pair of resulting free throws and Duce completing an old fashioned three point play seconds later, sealed the Wesmen’s fate and the ‘Horns cruised to the win.
“We had so many guys come out and contribute,” said Duce. “Wally (Waldner) got in foul trouble early and both Spencer (Wenzel) and Janz (Engen) came out and played some great minutes for us. We really used everyone today and I feel like we’re getting back to where we left off last year.”
The ‘Horns will face another test next weekend in their quest to improve on their record from last season. The ‘Horns will meet the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday, November 9, at the 1
st Choice Savings Centre at 8 pm. The game will be webcast on canadawest.tv.
