Dinos Blank Horns for the Weekend Sweep

For Immediate Release – 12/01/12

Lethbridge – A hat trick from Captain Brock Nixon lifted the University of Calgary Dinos to a 4-0 road win against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, Saturday night, at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Brooks Myers earned the first goal of the game while Brock Nixon followed up with three unanswered markers for the Dinos.

In net for the Dinos was Jacob DeSerres who stood tall between the pipes, earning a shutout after turning aside all 32 shots he faced.

Damien Ketlo started in net for the ‘Horns and made an incredible 52 saves on the night.

The first period of play saw both teams trade chances at each end of the ice but neither team would manage to score the opening goal. Outshooting the ‘Horns 17-14, the Dinos offense seemed fired up and ready to go, riding the momentum of their big 10-1 home win, Thursday night, in Calgary.

Trading penalties midway through the frame, both teams looked sharp with the man advantage, unloading shots from all angles. Great puck movement and solid shots from Cason Machacek and Tim Campbell worked to breakdown the Dinos defense but their efforts would be denied by the keeper.

Second period action got underway and, as tempers flared, the penalties started coming. Both teams would have chances with the man advantage but it was Calgary who would draw first blood at even strength. Brooks Myers was in the right place at the right time; redirecting a hard shot from Nyren, at 13:24 that would beat a down and out Ketlo, who was unable to react quickly enough.

Ketlo continued to face a swarm of Dinos as the period progressed, facing a staggering 23 shots in the frame, denying solid efforts by Blake Clement and Kevin King to keep his team within one.

The ‘Horns attempted to answer back with an offensive push of their own when Clayton Cumiskey found David McMullen alone in front of the Dinos net but his shot was stonewalled by DeSerres who held on to make the save.

Nixon would add to Calgary’s lead, his seventh of the season, on a late power play. Taking a great centering pass from Nyren, he wasted no time unloading his shot past Ketlo making it 2-0.

As the third period got underway, the Pronghorns would look to narrow the gap, but the Dinos didn’t let up. Earning his second marker of the night, Nixon rushed into the ‘Horns zone, skillfully deking his way past the Lethbridge defense and placed the puck past the Lethbridge net-minder.

Nixon wasn’t done there; looking for his hat-trick goal, he was parked in the slot, alone in front of the net, and took a hard pass from Bartman that Ketlo was unable to stop. The high wrister was quickly rifled top shelf, earning Nixon his hat trick.

Heading into the semester break, the Dinos improve to 8-6-0 on the season, while the ‘Horns fall to 1-13-2. Both teams will return to action in the New Year, with the ‘Horns traveling to Regina to face the Cougars and the Dinos will also head out on the road to face the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
