Horns Closing in on Post-Season Berth

2/1/2012 3:59:00 PM

Lethbridge - The Pronghorn men’s basketball team (9-7 CW) head out on the road for the final time this season, traveling to Brandon to face the Bobcats (5-11 CW). After four consecutive wins, the ‘Horns have moved into third place only one game behind the Alberta Golden Bears for second in the Prairie Division.

The Bobcats have been going in the opposite direction, losers of five straight and all but eliminated from post-season contention.

Tip-off for both nights is scheduled for 8:00pm CST at the Brandon University Gymnasium, it will also mark the final basketball games to be played in the gym, as Brandon University will open Healthy Living Centre in the fall of 2012; the games will also be webcast on www.canadawest.tv, home of all Canada West webcasts.

Horns Looking to Lock up playoff spot
With one win this weekend over the Bobcats, the ‘Horns will clinch a post-season spot, and with four games remaining, the Horns still have an outside chance to host the opening round of the Canada West playoffs but will need help from the two teams they are facing as well.

Both the ‘Horns and Golden Bears face the Bobcats and Regina Cougars over the next two weeks and for the ‘Horns to earn a home playoff date, they will have to win out and have the Bears go no better than 2-2.

Offensively the ‘Horns have really found their rhythm of late and after scoring 103 and 95 points in last weekend’s sweep of the Manitoba Bisons, they have moved up to sixth in the conference averaging 82.9 points per game.

Daryl Cooper leads the team with just under 16 points a game and Dominyc Coward posted three double-doubles during the ‘Horns four game winning streak. On the season Coward is averaging 15.4 points and 9.8 rebounds a game.
The ‘Horns will conclude their conference schedule next weekend, hosting the Regina Cougars.

Slumping Bobcats
Only three weeks ago sitting at 5-6, the Brandon Bobcats were right in the mix for a post-season position, but after a five game losing streak, the Bobcats will have to run the table and get some help from other teams if they are going to sneak into the post-season.

During the losing streak, the Bobcats have been held under their season average of 75.1 points in each game and dropped to 12th offensively in the conference. Emerick Ravier leads the team in scoring with 16.3 points but hasn’t played in the last seven games. Guard Ilarion Bonhomme , a freshman from Washington, DC is second in the conference in assists, averaging 5.8 per game.

Defensively, the Bobcats rank 10th, allowing 83.5 points per game.
