Vancouver, BC - The UBC Thunderbirds women's rugby team hung tough with the number three ranked team in the nation, but in the end, the Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated UBC 30-3 Sunday afternoon at Wolfson Field. Paula Woynarowsky scored three first half tries to lead the way for the 'Horns.

Lethbridge, the 6-time reigning Canada West Champions, opened up the scoring on a try from Cassandra Orr to lead 5-0. UBC just could not get the ball into Lethbridge territory, thanks to some strong defence from the Pronghorns. Lethbridge would then score more tries, one from Megan Wellis and two from Paula Woynarowsky to go up 20-0.

The Thunderbirds finally got on the board, courtesy of a penalty goal, off the foot of Catherine Ohler, to cut the lead to 20-3. However, before the half was out Woynarowsky would add her third try of the game to give Lethbridge a 25-3 lead at the break.

In the second half UBC was unable to capitalize on consecutive yellow cards for the Pronghorns, resulting in Lethbridge being short a player for 20 minutes. Instead Coreen Riley would add one more try late to make it a 30-3 final.

UBC falls to 0-2 on the season, while Lethbridge sits atop the Canada West Standings at 2-0.

The Thunderbirds are back in action next Sunday, September 30th, when they play host to Alberta at 1:00 pm at Wolfson Field.
