Calgary would strike first, opening the scoring the scoring at 8:59. Dinos’ captain, Brock Nixon’s quick blast from the red line found the top right corner, beating Lethbridge’s Tait. Freshman winger, Killian Hutt, responded only a couple minutes later for the ‘Horns, scoring his first CIS goal, shortly past the midpoint of the first frame.
The Dinos would add another in the dying minutes of the first, as King recorded his first of the night, but the ‘Horns responded quickly again. With under 30-seconds remaining in the period Captain Dan Iwanski, buried the puck past Butler back door making it 2-2 and bringing the crowd to their feet.
Outshot 13-5 in the opening frame, the ‘Horns were poised to come out strong in the second. Trying to make the most of offensive end turnovers, great shots by Hall and Henke came close but neither would manage to convert.
Trading penalties late in the second, each team came up short with a man advantage but a late surge by Lethbridge helped Fraser net his first ever Pronghorn goal, finding himself alone in front with a wide open net after fellow freshman Hayden Rintoul centered the puck. Heading into the second intermission, the Pronghorns held their first lead of the game, 3-2.
It took nearly half the third period, but Calgary’s elusive third goal came off the stick of Fiddler, whose offensive pressure in front of the net earned him the equalizer.
Facing a determined Dinos offensive, Tait skillfully denied all the shots he faced, keeping the score tied as the final buzzer rang out, signalling the end of regulation.
Nearly putting it away in the early minutes of overtime, Iwanski found himself one-on-one with Butler after a nifty centering pass from Clayton Cumiskey. Iwanski deeked to the backhand but Butler flashed the glove to steal a sure goal away from Iwanski.
