Box Score Edmonton - Burke Gallimore and Brett Ferguson each recorded four point nights as the No.1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears’ hockey team racked up a 9-1 win, and a weekend sweep over the under-manned and overmatched University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
Ferguson, a sophomore from Vibank, SK, notched a goal and three assists, while Gallimore, a freshman who previously played for the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL, had four assists. A former 30-goal scorer in the WHL, Gallimore now has six points in the six games he’s played in this season. Kruise Reddick scored a pair of goals for Alberta, while Johnny Lazo and Torrie Dyck each had a goal and an assist. Rearguard Thomas Carr chipped in with a pair of helpers, and fellow defenceman Jordan Rowley and Barron Smith also scored. For Smith, the son of former NHL’er Steve Smith, it was his first career conference goal as a Golden Bear. Matt Meropoulis and James Dobrowolski also scored for Alberta, and fifth-year goaltender Real Cyr made 14 saves for the win.
Lethbridge received their only goal from sophomore centre Cass Mappin. The former Drumheller Dragon beat Cyr with a PP tally in the middle of the second period. Despite the score, goaltender Damien Ketlo played well, stopping 47 shots in the loss. Three of the goals that got past him were while Alberta was on the power-play, including a 5-on-3. The CIS rookie netminder, a former Lethbridge Hurricane, faced 100 shots this weekend and stopped 87.
For Alberta, it is their 18
th win on the season, and their 15
th in the last 16 games. They continue to sit in first place in Canada West with 36 points, six better than both Manitoba and Saskatchewan who are tied for second place.
The Pronghorns only dressed 14 players on Saturday night, one less than Friday, and they skated both games without their best player, and leading scorer, rookie Chase Schaber. The losses drop the Southern Alberta program to 1-19-2 on the season.
Reddick got the ball rolling early for Alberta, scoring twice in the game’s opening seven minutes, including once on the PP, as the Bears put their foot down early on. Smith collected his first conference goal, and second all-time, at 15:52 of the first.
After Dobrowolski’s tally made it 4-0 in the second, Mappin beat Cyr with a rebound to make it 4-1, but that was the only sign of life from a defeated Pronghorns’ team.
Meropoulis’ first of the season closed out the second period scoring, and the Bears followed it up with four goals in the third, as Dyck, Lazo, Rowley and Ferguson all lit the lamp.
Alberta will next play in a home-and-home next weekend against the No.10 Calgary Dinos. Calgary, which split this weekend in Manitoba against the Bisons, will be in Clare Drake Arena on Saturday, January 26 at 6:00 pm, while the Bears will be in Calgary on Friday, January 25.
Lethbridge, meanwhile, returns home to host the No.8 Manitoba Bisons for a two-game series.
