Saskatoon - Derek Hulak's four point night led the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 5-2 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night in Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.
Â
The 2011-12 Canada West scoring champion tallied at 18:04 in the first period and at 2:51 into the second. He added assists on the Huskies' first and fourth goals in the game.
Â
With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 3-4 on the season and stops a two game losing skid. Lethbridge remains winless at 0-5.
Â
Saskatchewan opened the scoring at 5:07 in the first period on a tic-tac-toe play buried by rookie Charles Inglis from captain Brennan Bosh and Hulak on the power play. Hulak extended the lead when he snapped a Pronghorns' netminder Damien Ketlo rebound into the net at 18:04. The long rebound came after a Cody Hobbs shot from the point.
Â
Hulak's second of the night came short handed just 2:51 into the second period after intercepting a pass in the neutral zone. Breaking away, he beat Ketlo stick side. Bosch scored just under five minutes later on a cross-ice pass from Hulak at 7:41 for the 4-0 lead.
Â
Lethbridge found a jump in the third frame scoring at 4:09 after a bounce off the boards landed on Cass Mappin's stick. He was able to slide the puck into an open net before Huskies' net minder Ryan Holfeld could cover the post on the power play.
Â
At 10:32, the 'Horns cut the lead in half when Ryon Moser and Daniel Iwanski were left alone in front of the net. The quick pass across beat Holfed.
Â
Momentum continued on Lethbridge's side after Saskatchewan took a five-minute major and a two minute cross checking penalty in the final five minutes of the game. But the barrage of 'Horns shots couldn't find the net.
Â
Kenton Dulle scored the Huskies' insurance goal at 18:57 short handed into the empty net.
Â
Holfeld made 24 saves in the win for the Huskies, while Kelto stopped 35 for Lethbridge. Saskatchewan went 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while Lethbridge was 1-for-6.
