Lethbridge – On the strength of five power play markers, the CIS top ranked Alberta Golden Bears earned a weekend sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a convincing 8-1 victory Saturday night in Canada West men's hockey action.

Four Bears recorded three-point nights, with Kruse Reddick scoring a hat trick, Jordan Hickmont notching two goals and an assist and Levko Koper scoring once and adding two helpers. Jesse Craige recorded three helpers. Colin Joe and Brent Ferguson scored the other two Bears goals and each had two point nights. Mason Conway scored the lone Pronghorn goal.

In a carbon copy of the first period Friday night, the opening 20 minutes was a face paced affair with chances at both ends but tonight Alberta would strike first.

Off an offensive zone face-off win, Hickmont walked off the circle and beat 'Horns starter Damien Ketlo five-hole for his first of the night.

Less than two minutes later, the 'Horns would draw even from an unlikely source, streaking from his point position, Conway threw a puck at the net from a sharp angle and beat a surprised Cam Siemens but that would be the only one to beat him on this night. It was only Conway's second career CIS goal.

With four shots on goal from a late first period power-play, the Bears held a 13-6 shot advantage but the scoreboard was even after one.

The penalty parade started in the second period with the Bears receiving an early five-on-three advantage in the opening minute and a half. Reddick scored his first of the night with the two-man advantage and Hickmont was credited with his second before the second penalty expired.

Follow an unsuccessful second five-on-three Bears power play, the 'Horns would get their chance with a two-man advantage and an extended one at that as the Bears took three consecutive penalties. Unfortunately the 'Horns were unable to capitalize on their opportunity.

Koper continued the 'Bears offensive onslaught, taking the puck near the goal line and roofing a shot short side on Ketlo. Ferguson then pushed the lead to 5-1 before the period was out.

With frustrations boiling over in the third period, the 'Horns continued to the penalty box and the Bears power play continued to click in the third. Reddick scored consecutive power play markers to complete his hat trick and Joe picked up the Bears fifth power play goal to conclude the scoring.

Ketlo made 16 saves, before giving way to Alex Sirad at the start of the third and Sirad stopped 9 of the 12 shots he faced. Siemens earned the win for the Bears with 18 saves.

The win improves the Bears to a perfect 10-0 on the season and they remain tied with the Calgary Dinos a top the Canada West standing after the Dinos swept the Saskatchewan Huskies. The loss keeps the 'Horns in the Canada West basement at 1-9-0.

The 'Horns head out on the road next weekend to face the Manitoba Bisons, while the Bears will return home to face the Regina Cougars.
