Winnipeg - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen remain undefeated in regular season play after a 78-74 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg improves their record to a perfect 6-0 and tied with Saskatchewan for first place in the Prairie Division. Lethbridge with the loss falls back to .500 with a record of 3-3.
Steven Wesley led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points. He also hauled down 12 rebounds to complete the double-double. Ryan Oirbans also had a double-double consisting of 11 points and a game high 13 points. Sam Hattin scored 11 while Jordan Clennon had 10.
Logan Reiter led the Pronghorns with 17 points followed by Brandon Brine with 16 and a team leading eight rebounds. Jared Baker finished with 12 points and seven assists.
The visiting Pronghorns got momentum on their side early on building a 17-12 lead after the opening quarter. Winnipeg made a charge in a big way soon after.
The Wesmen exploded for 29 second quarter points and stepped up their defensive game holding Lethbridge to eight points in the frame. Winnipeg went into the the halftime break with a 41-25 lead.
Lethbridge came out of the halftime break looking to cut into the deficit and they managed to do so. The Pronghorns outscored Winnipeg 19-14 to cut the Wesmen lead to 11, trailing 55-44 after three quarters.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Winnipeg continued to hold the lead but once again Lethbridge made a comeback with over three minutes left to play. A jumper by Alex Fletcher followed by a three-point play by Jared Baker cut the Wesmen lead to 68-67. A Wesley lay up with just over two minutes left extended Winnipeg's lead to 71-67. A high arching three pointer by Brine once again cut the Wesmen lead to one at 71-70. A three pointer by Winnipeg's Travis Krahn with just over a minute left followed by a layup by Andrew Cunningham gave the Wesmen a 76-70 lead. Winnipeg held off a late charge and went on to record a 78-74 victory.
Winnipeg will take their unbeaten record on the road next week to UBC and Victoria. Lethbridge will be home to UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers.
