Calgary – The Mount Royal Cougars defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 6-5 in a shootout this evening at the Flames Community Arenas.

Cody Cartier led the way with three goals for the Cougars, while Derek Huisman and Brendan Turnbull each added one of their own. Brock Hirsche (2), Guillame Naud, Hayden Rintoul and David McMullen all scored for the Pronghorns. Matt Brown scored the shootout winner for Mount Royal.

Mount Royal fell behind early as Hirsche beat goaltender Dayln Flette glove-side just two minutes into the game. Despite being down early the game was all Cougars as they kept racking up shots. At the 16:52 mark Brendan Turnbull tied the goal on a play from Jeremy Burns and Kevin Knopp. The Cougars and Pronghorns were tied at one at the intermission.

Derek Huisman scored right out of the gate to make the score 2-1 for the Cougars but that goal was answered quickly by yet another game-tying goal from the Pronghorns. The Cougars looked to pull away as Cody Cartier took over, scoring two beautiful goals on the power play. Cartier's markers were the difference as the Cougars led 4-2 after two periods of play.

Cartier was not done yet as he completed the hat trick four minutes into the third. Mount Royal looked to be in the driver's seat but the Pronghorns continually chipped away and eventually began to wear down the Cougars. Lethbridge capitalized on the Cougar's defensive breakdowns and scored three unanswered goals to send the game to overtime.

Each team received a 4-on-3 power play during the two overtime periods but could not convert. After the buzzer sounded it was time for a shootout. Matt Brown shot first for the Cougars and buried a sweet little backhand to give Mount Royal the lead. All three Lethbridge shooters missed and Brown's goal stood up as the game winner.

Mount Royal now holds a record of 6-7-1. The Pronghorns are now 1-12-1.

Lethbridge will head back home next weekend where they will host UBC for a two game set starting on Friday November 29th.
