Lethbridge – Brandon Brine's fade away jumper from the elbow with only 4.5 seconds remaining lifted the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a come from behind 91-89 victory over the Regina Cougars and a weekend sweep in the process.
The 'Horns remain a perfect 6-0 at home on the season and improve to 7-3 with the win, while the Cougars fall to 2-8.
Brine led all scorers on the night with 27 points and fell one rebound short of the a double-double, while Morgan Duce chipped in with 22 points on 8 of 12 shooting, including six of nine from behind the arc.
The Cougars were led by a more balanced attack with five players reaching double digits in points. Brandon Tull led the way with 15 points, while Brendan Hebert, only attempted five shots, all from behind the arc connected on four for a 12 point night.
A night after nearly erasing a 17 point deficit in the fourth quarter, the Cougars rode that momentum into tonight's contest, leading 22-19 at the first break and after a 26-11 second quarter, held a 18 point lead at halftime.
Moving to a two-three zone and attempting to slow the pace, the Cougars disrupted the 'Horns offensive flow for the entire opening half and limited the conference' third ranked offense to only 30 first half points for only the second time this season.
Facing an uphill climb in the second half, the 'Horns exploded for 40 third quarter points, keyed by a scorching eight of 10 from behind the arc and cut the Cougar lead to only four points, setting up a dramatic fourth quarter.
Despite seeing their lead dwindle to single digits, the Cougars did score 26 third quarter points of their own.
In the fourth, neither team would give an inch and the margin remained a four point Cougar led with four minutes to play and set up a dramatic finish.
With the score tied at 87 with 24.7 seconds remaining and the shot clock set to expire, Jared Baker hit a runner in the lane to put the 'Horns up two.
Coming out of time out, the Cougars responded right back. Jeremy Zver, who finished the night with 11 points on the night, found himself all alone under the hoop after a 'Horns defensive miscue and his lay-up tied the score with 10.8 seconds remaining.
With overtime looming, Brine came off a screen to drill the go ahead jumper, but there was still more than four seconds for the Cougars to work with but Herbert's three would fall short.
Both teams will now enter the semester break and return during the second week of January. The 'Horns will open with a road swing to Mount Royal and UNBC, while the Cougars will play host to Thompson Rivers and UBC Okanagan.
