CALGARY – The No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos scored in bunches on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena as they topped the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 14-2 in their first game back from the holiday break.
Calgary scored five goals in the first and four in the second before finishing the game with a five-goal third period. The Dinos received offence from the entire bench as 13 different players earned multi-point nights. Spencer Edwards led the home team with four goals and an assist while Dylan Walchuk picked up a goal and four assists in his first CIS game.
"It's nice to watch guys find the back of the net, I thought we had some nice plays," commented Calgary head coach Mark Howell. "Saying that, we are still playing a little too loose and gave them a few too many looks."
"We stress that we want defence to come first," said Adam Kambeitz. "If you play well defensively though the offence is going to come and that is what happened especially in the first and third."
These two teams will match-up again tomorrow night in Lethbridge. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at the Nicholas Sheran Arena.
It appeared through the opening 10 minutes that Lethbridge had brought some fight to Calgary. The Pronghorns were catching the Dinos in their own end and playing a smart, gritty game. Things changed after the 10 minute mark though as the country's top ranked team took charge.
Edwards scored the first goal of the game for Calgary at 11:17 and followed it up with his second of the game and eighth of the year at 14:16. Making his Dino debut, Elgin Pearce picked up an assists on Edward's first tally. The former Medicine Hat Tiger had a pair of assists in his Dino debut.
Kambeitz also notched a pair of goals for the Dinos in the first frame, separated by a power play marker from Brett Bartman in the final minute of the period.
Following the fifth goal by Calgary, tempers flared as Cason Machacek was assessed a checking to the head penalty and a 10-minute misconduct. Cooler heads prevailed though as the Dinos took a five-goal advantage and power play into the second period.
Calgary widened the gap in the middle stanza as they potted four more goals. Kevin King began the period with a slick toe-drag and a shot ripped off the bar and in for his fifth of the season. Ryan Harrison, Walchuk and Walker Wintoneak also found the back of the net for the home side.
The Pronghorns countered on the scoresheet in the second period with goals by Cass Mappin and Ryan Letts. Those were the only goals to get past Kris Lazaruk as the Calgary netminder finished with 19 stops. Lethbridge replaced starting goaltender Alex Sirard with Damien Ketlo after the Dinos' seventh goal.
Lethbridge surrendered five more goals in the final frame to round out the 14-2 score after a parade to the penalty box. Edwards recorded his third and fourth goals while Wintoneak scored his second of the evening. Jordan Messier and Taylor Stefishen netted singles.                                                              Â
