Lethbridge – With a two-win weekend to open the second semester of conference action, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team has set up a show down with the CIS third ranked Alberta Golden Bears for first place in the Prairie Division.
The 'Horns moved to 9-3 on the season with overtime wins over the Mount Royal Cougars and UNBC Timberwolves last weekend and into a tie for second place in the division with the Saskatchewan Huskies. The 'Horns have now extended their win streak to six games in a row.
Also, playing their first conference games of the New Year last weekend, the Bears continued their stellar season and improved to 11-1 with road wins over the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds.
Following the 126-point performance in their triple overtime win versus the Timberwolves, the 'Horns now lead the conference offensively, scoring 86.6 points per contest. With three players in the top 11 in conference scoring and five averaging double digit points per game, the 'Horns sport one of the most balanced scoring attacks in Canada West. Logan Reiter and Brandon Brine lead the way averaging 16.8 and 16 points respectively.
The 'Horns are also ranked first in free throw percentage (76.4%), rebounding (43.9), assists per game (20.4) and steals (9.6).
However, the 'Horns enter the weekend ranked 15
th in the conference defensively, allowing their opponents to score on average 82.3 points per game.
The Golden Bears are riding a six game winning streak of their own. Statistically solid at both ends of the floor, it's no surprise that they have only lost one conference game thus far. The Bears come to Lethbridge as the second best defensive team in the conference, allowing just 64.2 points per game.
At the other end of the floor, the Bears have scored the fourth most points per game (79.8) and lead the conference in field goal percentage (45.9%).
While Jordan Baker and Kenneth Otieno are the only two Bears averaging more than 10 points per game, the team has seven players who average more than seven points a game. Baker is fifth in conference scoring with 17.9 points per game, while Otieno scores at a 12.5 points per game clip.
