‘Horns host University Cup bound Huskies

Lethbridge – Heading down the home stretch of the 2013-14 Canada West season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's hockey remains at home this weekend, hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies for a pair of games at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Puck drop for both Friday and Saturday night's games are scheduled from 7:00pm and both games will be streamed live on http://canadawest.tv.

While the 'Horns have not been mathematically eliminated from the post-season, with just eight games remaining and still nine points back of the UBC Thunderbirds for sixth place, a playoff berth for the 'Horns is highly unlikely this season.

Ranked at the bottom of the conference in nearly every category statistically, the 2013-14 season has not gone as planned for the 'Horns. They have scored a conference low 34 goals in 20 games and have only scored more than two goals five times this season while being shut-out on five occasions.

Ryon Moser and Cass Mappin continue to lead the 'Horns offensively with 13 and 12 points respectively.

At the other end of the rink, the 'Horns have allowed the most goals in the conference, surrendering 107 goals thus far.

The Saskatchewan Huskies, who have already punched their ticket to the University Cup as hosts, currently sit third in the conference. However, after losing both games to the Alberta Golden Bears last weekend, they now trail the Bears by 11 points for second place and a coveted first round bye in the playoffs.

With the opening round bye likely out of reach, the Huskies will have to turn their attention to fending off the Manitoba Bisons, Regina Cougars, UBC Thunderbirds for third spot and home ice in the first round. Entering the weekend the Huskies hold a one point lead on the Bisons, a two point lead on the Cougars and while the T-Birds are six points back, they hold two games in hand on the other three teams.

Huskie forward Derek Hulak leads all Canada West scorers with seven goals and 22 assists, while a distant second in team scoring Brennan Bosch has 17 points in 20 games.

In goal, Ryan Holfeld has played every minute for the Huskies this season  so far and has a 2.44 goals-against-average and a 0.918 save percentage. Earlier this season the Huskies swept the 'Horns in Saskatoon with wins by 5-2 and 7-0 scores.

The 'Horns will have a bye next weekend before returning to action the following weekend, traveling to Edmonton to take on the CIS second ranked Golden Bears.
