Box Score

Lethbridge - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies mounted an impressive 7-1 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, Friday night, in the first of a two game weekend series.

Huskies goals were scored by Jesse Ross, Andrew Bailey, John Lawrence, Zak Stebner, Derek Hulak, Kenton Dulle, and Brennan Bosch. Tim Campbell scored the lone goal for Lethbridge.

Alex Sirard got the start for Lethbridge but was relieved after surrender three goals in the first ten minutes by Damien Ketlo, who would go on to face 33 shots on the night.

Ryan Holfeld started in net for Saskatchewan and he stopped all but one of the 25 shots he faced.

Ross netted the game's first goal at 4:31 of the opening frame. His wrister went top shelf, short blocker side, to give the Huskies an early lead.

Great hands behind the net allowed Bailey to double up on the Huskie's early lead, at 7:03. Sneaking around and in front of the net, his nice backhanded effort would beat Sirard, who was unable to get into position.

Moments later, Lawrence added a marker of his own, the Huskies third goal in less than five minutes.

The Horns netted their first goal of the night at 17:09. With a bunch of bodies in front of Holfeld, Campbell managed to sneak the puck over the line.

Shots through one favoured the Huskies, 16-4.

Garrett Thiessen unloaded a hard blast from the point but Ketlo flashed the pad and kicked it wide.

Ketlo seemed to have Stebner's soft shot under control but somehow the puck snuck past him and ended up in the net, widening the Huskies lead to 4-1 midway through the second.

Faced with a 5-on-3 nearing the midway point of the second, Ketlo diffused several great scoring chances, first by Matthew Delahey in close, and then a hard shot by captain, Brennan Bosch.

Defender Mason Conway stepped out of the box at just the right time to take an outlet pass and quickly found himself on a breakaway attempt but Holfeld stayed with him and shut the door.

Horns captain, Dan Iwanski, fired a rocket through traffic but Holfeld rose to the occasion, once again, redirecting the hard shot wide and out of harm's way.

Towards the end of the second, Ketlo gloved down a hard shot by Derek Hulak, who combined for eight points in his last two match-ups two against the Pronghorns, back in October.

Saskatchewan continued to build on their lead in the third. A big face off win in the Huskies allowed Hulak to fire a hard shot on net that would find the top shelf blocker side and his marker was followed up almost immediately by two more, one by Dulle and another by Bosch, each on the power play. With three goals in less than three minutes, the Huskies had now established a commanding 7-1 lead.

With this win the Huskies improve to 11-9-1 while the Pronghorns sit at 2-17-2. Game two of the weekend series goes tomorrow night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Puck drop is at 7pm and the game will also be streamed live at http://canadawest.tv.
