'Horns knock off Huskies to earn split

Saskatoon - The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns shot 53 percent from the field to upset the No. 9 University of Saskatchewan Huskies 97-84 Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
 
The Pronghorns connected on 17-of-30 attempts in the second half, including 6-of-13 from three-point range, en route to the win. Saskatchewan shot 40 percent from the field in the loss.
 
With the win Lethbridge improves to 11-5 and snaps an eight game losing streak in Saskatoon, while Saskatchewan drops to 12-4 on the season.
 
Lethbridge opened the contest with back-to-back three-pointers and built up an early 14-6 lead. Evan Ostertag started and finished a string of four straight made three's by the Huskies, as Saskatchewan went on a 20-4 run to grab a 26-21 lead after the first.
 
Saskatchewan led 39-30 midway through the second quarter, but the Lethbridge offense began to convert on open jump shots and in transition ending the quarter with a 16-6 run to lead 50-47 at halftime.
 
Dadrian Collins and Stephon Lamar hit back-to-back three's to get the Huskies offense going in the third, but the 'Horns, led by Alex Fletcher's 11 points in the period, held a 75-69 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
 
The Huskies kept the deficit between five and eight points for the majority of the fourth until the Pronghorns pulled away on a Brent Watkins jumper and a Jared Baker three-pointer in the final two mintues.
 
Watkins recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds on the night for the 'Horns. Logan Reiter scored a game-high 28 points. Baker added another 20 points for the visitors.
 
Ostertag led all Huskie scorers with 25 points hitting 9-of-12 shots from the floor including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Canada West rebounding leader Ben Baker recorded another double-double with 10 boards and 12 points. Lamar added 21 points in the loss.
 
Saskatchewan remains at home to take on the UNBC Timberwolves and Mount Royal Cougars next weekend. The Pronghorns will host the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes.
