Box Score
Lethbridge –The University of Regina Cougars scored three unanswered goals and mounted a 3-0 win against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to open the second half of the Canada West season.
Brock Appleyard, Liam Brennan, and Christian Magnus each earned individual markers for the Cougars.
Andrew Hayes started in goal for Regina, turning aside all 20 shots he faced to secure a road shut-out, his third of the season. Damien Ketlo got the start for Lethbridge and faced 30 shots on the night.
The eventual game winning goal came at 7:10 in the first period. Appleyard's wrister, from Craig Cuthbert and John Sonntag, took a lucky bounce off a 'Horns defender and skipped past Ketlo's outstretched pad.
With the Horns looking to even the score, tensions were rising and both teams upped their physical play. With Mason Conway and Corbin Karl in the box for boarding and interference, respectively, the Cougars looked to capitalize on a prolonged 5-on-3 opportunity.
Cody Fowlie's shot from the side of the net was turned aside by Ketlo but Brennan, well-positioned in front of the net, managed to secure the loose rebound and notch a quick marker high glove-side, just after the 'Horns first penalty had expired, extending his team's lead to two.
Cass Mappin tried to push one in past Hayes in the final minute of the first but his effort was stonewalled by the keeper.
After a scoreless and uneventful second stanza and Troy Hunter in the box serving time for a 'too many men' call, Magnus widened the gap to three, netting an unassisted shorthanded marker at less than five minutes into the third.
With this win the Cougars improve to 9-8-0 (CW) while the Horns fall to 1-15-1 (CW). Game two of the weekend series goes tomorrow night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. The puck drops at 7pm and the game will also be streamed live at
