Box Score Edmonton - The CIS No.1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey team erupted for five goals in the third period to score a come-from-behind 7-3 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
The win gives Alberta a weekend sweep over the Horns, and the Evergreen and Gold outscored Lethbridge 17-3 in two games, as well as outshot them 110-43. The Bears also improved their conference record to 3-1 on the season.
Fourth-year forward Brett Ferguson had five points on Saturday, including the game winning goal, while sophomore winger T.J. Foster, who had four points on Friday, added two goals to help propel Alberta to the win. Jordan Hickmott, who scored four goals on Friday night, added a goal and two assists on Saturday, while Kruise Reddick and James Dobrowolski also scored for Alberta. Hickmott, now in his fourth-year, leads the country in points (10) and goals (7). Fifth-year goaltender Kurtis Mucha made 24 saves for the win, his third of the season.
Mitchell Maxwell, Brandon Clowes and Mark Hall all bulged the twine for Lethbridge, while goalie Dylan Tait made 49 saves in the loss. But, the Horns saw their record fall to 0-4.
They did, however, open the scoring on this night when Maxwell, a sophomore right-winger, beat Mucha at 7:03 of the first while skating on the power-play.
Alberta stormed right back and scored two goals in less than five minutes to close out the period, with Hickmott and Foster each beating Tait as the Bears headed into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.
That lead didn't last long, as just 11 seconds into the middle frame, Hall scored his first of the year, while Lethbridge was shorthanded, and suddenly it was a 2-2 game, despite Alberta holding a commanding 23-8 lead on the shot clock.
The Pronghorns then took their second lead of the night when Clowes beat Mucha at 16:53 to make it a 3-2 game heading into the third period.
Foster, with his fourth of the season, made it 3-3 at 5:13 of the third, and then Ferguson scored the eventual game winner when he solved Tait at 12:39. Reddick increased the lead to 5-3 six minutes later, and then Ferguson added an empty netter at 19:24. Dobrowolski capped off the scoring 27 seconds later when he tapped in a goal mouth feed to make the final score 7-3.
The Bears return to action next weekend when they travel to Regina to take on the 0-4 Cougars, while Lethbridge will play the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series.
