Lethbridge – Coming off their first two wins of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorns kept the momentum going with their third win a row, defeating the Regina Cougar 5-3 in the first game of a weekend set.
Dan Iwanski, scored twice, including the game winner, while Mitch Maxwell, Sam Wilbur and Mike Forsyth picked up singles for the Pronghorns. Tyler Giebel, Liam Brennan and Cody Fowlie responded for the Cougars.
Dylan Tait earned the win in the 'Horns crease making 31 saves, his counterpart Lucas Gore made 27 saves in the loss.
Following an early unsuccessful Pronghorn power play, the Cougars got one of their own and took full advantage, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. Tyler Henry found Giebel back door, who made no mistake with a wide open cage.
The 'Horns stormed right back tying the game at 1-1 only 27 seconds later. Brent Henke corralled a loose puck behind the goal line and found Iwanski streaking down the slot and his one timer beat a stunned Gore.
With the 'Horns shorthanded for a second time in the period, Henke was back at setting up the 'Horns second goal, incepting a Cougar puck just inside his own blue line and raced down the wall. His centring attempt found Maxwell backdoor, and he beat a down and out Gore for his third of the season.
Late in the period, Giebel had a great chance to tie the game at two, ripping a shot past Tait but not the crossbar. The Cougars held a 10-9 shot advantage after 20 minutes of play.
For majority of the second period the play was scrabbly and even chaotic at times but it would be the Cougars that would find the equalizer. Following some sustained Cougar pressure, Zach McPhee won a puck battle below the goal line and his centering pass found Brennan who somehow managed to slip the puck past Tait from in tight.
Looking to regain their lead, the 'Horns were able generate some sustained offensive zone time but the Regina did a good job getting in the shooting lanes, blocking multiple 'Horns shots and any of the one's that did manage to get through, Gore turned aside.
However, with only seconds left in the second period and an offensive zone face-off, the 'Horns threw the puck at the net and freshman Sam Wilbur was Johnny on the spot. As the puck slide under Gore's pads, Wilbur was waiting to jam home the loose puck to give the 'Horns a one goal lead heading into the final frame.
Just when it looked like the 'Horns were going to be able to shut down the Cougars a seeing eye shot from Fowlie from the point brought the game back level a three, with just over nine minutes remaining.
With the game on the line, senior forward Dan Iwanski came through to give the 'Horns the lead back. Maxwell attempted a wrap around and the rebound squirted out to Iwanski.
The Cougars pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but Mark Hall stole the puck just inside the 'Horns blue line and fed Forsyth, who sealed the 'Horns victory into the empty net.
The 'Horns and Cougars will wrap up the weekend series with a Sunday afternoon affair; puck drops at 3:00pm at Nicholas Sheran Arena. The game will also be webcast on http://canadawest.tv.
