Box Score CALGARY – The No. 5 University of Calgary Dinos closed out their home schedule on Saturday night, blanking the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns with a 4-0 victory at the Father David Bauer Arena.
Before the game, the Dinos honoured Kodie Curran, Colton Grant, Kris Lazaruk and Walker Wintoneak for their five years spent with the program. Curran would stand out, taking home the game's first star with two goals and an assist. Jacob DeSerres made 19 saves to record his second shutout of the season.
"It was a blast to share tonight with the guys, I had family and friends out. I am so appreciative for my five years here and all the guys that helped me get through it," explained Curran. "We had a tough first period tonight but we fought through it and got our game back on track."
With the win, the Dinos improve to 18-8-0 on the season, while the Pronghorns fall to 4-22-0.
"I think we took tonight for granted a little bit. It can be tough to check in mentally after a 9-1-type game," said Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "I thought Kodie had his best game since coming back. He had his legs moving and found some open lanes. With his skill, he can score some goals."
Just minutes into the game, one of Calgary's four senior players got the scoring started. After Dylan Walchuk's chance from the left side of the goal was stopped by Warren Shymko, the puck bounced into the slot for Curran. The local product wasted little time settling into the shot and blasting past the Lethbridge goaltender for his seventh of the season.
Extending the lead to 3-0 in the middle frame, Spencer Edwards picked up a pair of primary assists. While on the power play at 6:48, Edwards dished the puck from the left corner to the far side of the blue paint where Curran lifted his second of the game past Shymko for his eighth of the year.
Chris Collins tallied the other goal of the second period. After some good stick work by Aspen Sterzer, the puck was turned over to Edwards who fed a cross-ice pass to Collins for a tap-in. The goal at 9:37 was Collins' 11
th of the campaign.
On a late power play in the third period, the Dinos would score once more to round out the scoring. Skating in from the point, Drydn Dow wired a hard shot through Shymko for his second of the season.
Calgary outshot Lethbridge 32-19. The Dinos went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Pronghorns went 0-for-4.
The Dinos finish the regular season next weekend as they head to Regina to take on the Cougars from Jan. 29-30. Lethbridge will wrap up their regular season at home from Jan. 29-30 as they host the UBC Thunderbirds.
