Box Score SASKATOON – First-year forward Andrew Johnson scored back-to-back goals to lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 3-2 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night in Rutherford Rink.
Johnson scored at 17:22 of the second period and 6:56 of the third for his third and fourth goals of the young Canada West season to tie him for the early scoring lead.
With the win the Huskies improve to 3-0 and move alone in first place while Lethbridge drops to 1-2.
"I think our guys are still figuring each other out and it took us half the game to get going but once we did we started to control the game," said head coach Spiros Anastas. "we're a young team and we're starting to realize the slim margin for error in this league."
"we handed them the tying goal when we were up 1-0, if we don't do that it's a different game."
The Pronghorns opened the scoring early in the opening period. Cass Mappin took a Justin Valentino pass at 2:35 and beat Jordon Cooke for the game's opening goal.
The lead was short lived as the Huskies tied it up at 8:30 of the first on Jesse Ross' first goal of the season. Zak Stebner and John Lawrence assisted on the goal. The goal was the first of three straight for Saskatchewan.
Johnson got his first of two on the night on the power play with just over two minutes left in the second period.
The Huskies kept the momentum early in the third and grew the lead to 3-1. It was Johnson scoring again with assists from Levi Cable and Kohl Bauml on the play to pull away.
The 'Horns did not let up and scored less than three minutes later to cut the lead back down to one. Dalton Sward notched his first of the year at 9:16 with Valentino getting his second assist of the night.
Despite late pressure from Lethbridge, Cooke and the Huskies were able to hold on for the victory. Cooke finished the night with 24 saves.
Reigning CIS male athlete of the week Dylan Tait was once again solid in the crease for the 'Horns. Tait made 31 saves and was named the game's second star.
"There's no quit in these guys and they cann't wait for 7pm Saturday to be here, we'll be ready to go," concluded Anastas
The two teams meet again Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Rutherford Rink.
