‘Horns host defending Canada West Champion Alberta Pandas

Lethbridge – In their only home game of the 2015 season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's rugby team hosts the defending Canada West Champion Alberta Pandas Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:30am.

The only two programs to raise the Canada West trophy, the 'Horns and Pandas have had their fair share of intense battles. The Pandas won the first seven championships and the last three titles. In between, the 'Horns won six consecutive Canada West titles from 2006 to 2011.

Last weekend, the 'Horns opened the conference schedule with a trip to the West Coast, losing their opening game 40-22 to the Victoria Vikes before battling the UBC Thunderbirds to a 12-12 tie. With a playoff spot at stake, the bonus point the 'Horns earned by scoring four tries in the loss to the Vikes could prove to be the difference.

The 'Horns are one point ahead of the Thunderbirds in the standings with each team having two games remaining.

Nicole Ronsky, the lone Pronghorn to be named to the 2014 Canada West all-star team, picked up where she left off last year, scoring two tries last weekend. 'Horns hooker Frederique Tremblay also scored twice, both in the loss to the Vikes. Outside half Sarah Gordon also had a solid weekend scoring one try and hitting two converts.

After a disappointing result at last year's CIS Championship tournament, the 10-time Canada West champion Alberta Pandas entered the season with a CIS Championship or bust mentality, but lost a rematch of the 2014 Canada West gold medal game, 34-19 to the Calgary Dinos in Calgary.

The Pandas opened the season ranked sixth in the CIS but have since dropped to #10 in the nation.

With only two departed players from last season's conference championship team, the Pandas are a veteran team and will look to rebound from their season opening loss. Sarah Haring, Julia Goss and Aline Wicklum each scored tries versus the Dinos, while co-captain Rebecca Fairbairn converted two of the three Panda tries.

The 'Horns will wrap up the conference schedule October 17th in Calgary versus the undefeated Calgary Dinos. The Canada West Championships will go October 23 and 25 in Edmonton.
