‘Horns look to extend streak versus the Cougars

Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorn men's hockey team enters the final two weekends of the first semester as the hottest team in Canada West, entering the weekend on a five game winning streak and hosting the Regina Cougars for a pair of games in their final home games of 2015.

Puck drops Friday night at 7:00pm and Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Both games will be streamed live on www.canadawest.tv.

The 'Horns (6-5-1) pushed their win streak to five with a road sweep of the Manitoba Bisons, moving their record above the 500 mark for the first time since the 2010-2011 season. The 'Horns have also moved up to fifth in the conference and are only four points out of second place.

During the streak, the 'Horns have held their opponents to two or less goals in three of the five games, while scoring more than five goals in a game three times as well.

Individually, Mitch Maxwell continues to lead the 'Horns in scoring with four goals and nine assists, while after a six point weekend last week, Brandon Clowes sits one point behind Maxwell with 12 points in 12 games. Maxwell sits seventh in Canada West scoring, while Clowes cracked the top 10 and is tied for eighth.

Head coach Spiros Anastas continues to rotate Dylan Tait and Damien Kelto in the 'Horns crease. Tait has allowed only three goals against in his last two starts and has dropped his goals-against average to 2.63. In four appearances this season, Ketlo is 2-2-0 with a 3.20 goals-against average and a 0.911 save percentage.

While the 'Horns are trending upward, the same cannot be said for the Regina Cougars (2-10-0), as they have only won once in their last 10 games and were swept handily at home last weekend by Mount Royal.

Regina is last in Canada West in both goals for and against this season, scoring only 20 goals so far and allowing 62 goals-against. The Cougars are also ranked eighth in both specialty team categories with the power play only operating at 7.1% and their penalty killing is at 67.4%.

Not surprisingly, the Cougars do not have a player in the top 20 in Canada West scoring but are led by a trio of players: Cody Fowlie (3G, 2A), JJ Coleshaw (2G, 3A) and Troy Hunter (2G, 3G).

In the crease, the Cougars have used three different goaltenders this season, however Dawson MacAuley has the best numbers of the three with a 4.00 goals-against average and a 0.891 save percentage.

The 'Horns will wrap up the first semester of conference action next weekend, traveling to Edmonton to face the defending CIS Champion, the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
