Box Score
Lethbridge – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns dropped a 7-4 decision to the visiting University of Regina Cougars, putting an end to a five-game win streak.

Damien Ketlo got the start for the Pronghorns and went on to face a total of forty shots on the night. At the other end, Andy Desautels started in net for the Cougars and would manage to stop all but four of the 42 shots he faced on the night.

Lethbridge goals were scored by Artsiom Kalishnikov, Dalton Sward, Brock Hirsche, and Spencer Jensen. Dylen McKinley, Austin Bourhis, Mark Schneider, and Landon Peel each net individual markers for the Cougars, while Ian McNaulty added three goals in the third period for a hat-trick.

The opening period saw lots of action at each end, with both teams getting a number of early scoring chances. Tyler Bell and Brock Appleyard each tested Ketlo with wristers that were stopped by the Lethbridge keeper and Dillan McCombie's shot through traffic came close but was kicked wide.

The 'Horns responded with some offensive pressure of their own. Artisiom Kalishnikov had a great scoring chance in the first half of the frame and Tim Campbell's hard shot from just inside the blue line was kicked wide by Desautels.

Lethbridge struck first, at 10:49. Kalishinikov put the puck on net, from Mappin and Jones, for his first of the season. With Colton Sheen in the box for goaltender interference, Regina's McKinlay sent a rocket top-shelf, from the top of the circle, to quickly even things up, at 15:13, with the help of Sanfred King.

Early in the second period, Bourhis net his first of the season, which gave the Cougars their first lead and midway through the period, with Cass Mappin in the box for slashing, Cody Fowlie hit Schneider with a great cross-crease pass and the fifth-year defender put a hard shot into the open net to extend his team's lead to two.

The 'Horns responded with less than five minutes remaining in the frame. Out-skating two Regina defenders, Sward crashed the net and managed to get a quick shot off that would beat Desautels and cut the lead to two, but Regina's Peel replied almost immediately, adding another goal, as time expired, to re-establish a three goal lead heading into the break.

Fast-paced play continued through the third. McNaulty made a smart move, in on a two-on-one, holding onto the puck and unloading a quick wrister that would beat Ketlo low blocker-side.

Hirsche replied for the Horns, at 6:21, his first of the season. Skating out of the corner, he put a quick shot on net which beat the Cougars' keeper.

McNaulty added two more goals for Regina in the third and despite a late marker from Jensen, the Horns' were unable to mount a comeback.

With this loss, the 'Horns fall to 6-6-1, while the Cougars snap their streak and improve to 3-10-0. Game two of the weekend series goes tomorrow afternoon, at 1pm, and will be broadcast live at www.canadawest.ca
