Box Score Lethbridge - Tim Campbell scored twice, including the overtime winner with 26 seconds left, to give the Pronghorns a 2-1 win and complete a two-game sweep over the CIS #8 ranked UBC Thunderbirds at Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge Sunday afternoon.
Â
With their third consecutive win, Lethbridge improves to 4-5-1 on the season while UBC drops its second straight and falls to 6-1-3 on the year.
Â
Former Lethbridge Hurricane Damien Ketlo made his third start in net for the 'Horns and was outstanding, turning aside 38 shots to get the win, while Eric Williams was in the crease for the T-Birds and made 33 saves in a losing effort.
Â
A fast-paced opening period saw the Pronghorns outshoot the Thunderbirds 17-12 and generate several quality scoring chances in close on Williams only to be denied by the second-year netminder. Ketlo was equally solid at the other end of the rink, including a nice stop on Manraj Hoyer who broke in alone late in the period and fired a hard wrist-shot that just glanced off Ketlo's blocker.
Â
The Pronghorns continued to mount pressure on UBC's defense early in the second. At the four-minute mark, Lethbridge rookie Tyler Hansen fed Campbell on a two-on-one down the right wing and the 'Horns leading goal-scorer made no mistake finding the back of the net to give the Pronghorns a 1-0 lead.
Â
UBC countered the 'Horns attack and controlled the play in their offensive zone when Chase Clayton found himself all alone in the slot but the first-year forward ripped his shot off the right post. Minutes later the T-Birds Luke Lockhart streaked down the left side, cut hard in front of the net, but again hit the post behind a sprawled-out Ketlo.
Â
The T-Birds outshot the Pronghorns 11-7 in the second period but couldn't find the equalizer going into the final frame.
Â
Eager to draw the game back to even the T-Birds won the opening face-off and Joel Hamilton got a good look on a partial breakaway but Ketlo got his right pad out to stone the rookie forward. Moments later Lockhart again had a dangerous chance from the slot but was denied by Ketlo.
Â
UBC kept up the pressure in the 'Horns end and got a lucky break to tie the game. Anthony Bardaro took possession behind the Pronghorn net and had the puck deflect off his stick and clear over the crossbar, hitting Ketlo in the back and trickling across the line for the goal.
Â
After the Thunderbirds killed off Nick Buonassisi's elbowing penalty with three minutes remaining in the third they hit the third-year forward in stride coming out of the box and he went in alone, trying to beat Ketlo high on his glove side but the 'Horns goalie came up with a huge stop to keep the game tied.
Â
Brandon Clowes took an ill-advised high-sticking penalty with 10 seconds left in the third, sending the Thunderbirds into overtime with the man advantage. Playing 4-on-3 for the first 1:50 of the extra frame, the T-Birds were unable to get a quality chance on net and the 'Horns killed off the penalty.
Â
Almost completely out of gas late in overtime, Mitchell Maxwell and Ryon Moser combined on a nifty give-and-go but Moser couldn't slide it under Williams' pad to end the game. But with 26 seconds left in sudden death Moser went behind the T-Bird net and fed the puck to Maxwell who took hard shot from the point that Campbell got in front of and deflected behind Williams for his second of the night to give the 'Horns a 2-1 overtime victory.
Â
The Pronghorns head on the road next weekend to face the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg while the T-Birds continue their road swing with a visit to Saskatoon to battle the first-place Huskies.
