Lethbridge – Following their loss last Saturday night, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team was officially eliminated from post-season contention and will conclude the 2014-15 Canada West season this weekend on the road, traveling to Edmonton to face the 10
th ranked team in the CIS, the Alberta Golden Bears.
The 'Horns and Bears will square off Friday night at 8:00pm and Saturday night at 7:00pm. Both games will be streamed live on
http://canadawest.tv. This season, University of Alberta and Canada West have partnered in a pilot project to gauge the viability of future subscription-based viewing purchases.
Fans interested in viewing Alberta home games will have the choice between the $1.99 single-game access or the $6.99 full-season subscription. All other Canada West games will be available for viewing without subscription. Proceeds from the pilot will be reinvested into CanadaWest.TV.
While the loss ended any hopes of a playoff appearance, the 'Horns (7-11) did upset the fifth ranked Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night and put an end to the Huskies eight-game winning streak.
After a slow start to the season, the Golden Bears (12-6) are hitting their stride at the right time and enter the final weekend of the conference schedule riding a six-game winning streak. The Bears are also only one game back of first place in the Pioneer Division and have their sights on that top spot.
Statistically, the 'Horns will face the top ranked defensive team in Canada West this weekend, as the Bears are only allowing 69.4 points against per game. The 'Horns are ranked 13
th defensively, allowing 79.8 points against.
On the offensive side, the 'Horns are ranked 11
th, averaging 76.3 points, while the Bears are ranked one spot above the 'Horns, scoring 76.6 points per game.
Players to watch:
Aussie Brandon Brine continues to lead the 'Horns in scoring with 16.9 points per game and ranks 11
th in Canada West. Post Brent Watkins sits second on the 'Horns with 13.9 points and leads the team in rebounding with 7.5 per night.
Coming off a weekend where he combined for 46 points in the two games against the Huskies, Rob Olsen's average moved up to 13 points per game and is third among Pronghorn scoring.
For the Bears, fifth-year guard Joel Friesen leads the way offensively and is sixth on the conference scoring list with 18.5 points per game, while Mamadou Gueye is one spot below Friesen and is averaging 17.7 points per game.
