Lethbridge – Following a month long semester break from conference action the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's hockey team returns to action this weekend, hosting the CIS fourth ranked Saskatchewan Huskies.
Puck drops at 7:00pm both Friday and Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Both games will also be streamed live on
www.canadawest.tv.
After a five game winning streak moved the 'Horns (6-9-1) back into the playoff picture, the team sputtered heading into the semester break, losing four straight to close out the first semester, but sit tied for the final playoff spot in Canada West.
Through the first 16 games of the season, the 'Horns have scored the fifth most goals in the conference with 48 but have allowed the second most goals against with 68.
One area of concern for the 'Horns heading into the home stretch is the play of their specialty teams. The 'Horns sport the worst penalty killing numbers in the conference, only killing penalties at a 61.7% rate but have been shorthanded the second fewest times in the conference. The power play is ranked seventh (16.1%)
Offensively, the 'Horns are led by Brandon Clowes and Mitch Maxwell. Clowes leads the team with 15 points, while Maxwell has 14. Defenceman Tim Campbell lead the 'Horns and all Canada West defencemen in goals with eight.
The fourth ranked Huskies (13-3-0) on the other hand had a stellar first half of the season and sit one point ahead of the Alberta Golden Bears in first place in the conference.
As expected, statistically the Huskies rank among the best in most categories in the conference. The Huskies have scored the second most goals with 60, while also allowing the second fewest goals (41). On specialty teams, the Huskies are ranked third in penalty killing (80%) and fourth with the man advantage (23.4%).
Offensively, the Huskies have three players leading the way in points with 15. A pair of rookies ranked second among Canada West freshmen scoring. Andrew Johnson and Kohl Baumi each have 15 points but Johnson has eight goals. Third-year forward Josh Roach also has 15 points.
Another freshman, Levi Cable has also gotten off to a good start to his collegiate career and leads the Huskies and all rookies in goals with 10.
The 'Horns head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Regina to face the University of Regina Cougars.
