Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorn men's hockey team heads out on the road this weekend, looking to rebound versus the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
Puck drops at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre Friday night at 7:00PM Pacific time and Saturday at 4:00PM PST. Both games will be streamed live at
www.canadawest.tv, home of all Canada West webcasts.
Last week, the 'Horns (2-3-1) dropped a pair of decisions to southern Alberta rival Calgary Dinos, dropping the front half of the home-and-home 5-3 Friday night in Lethbridge. The next night in Calgary, the 'Horns held a 1-0 lead into the third period but could not hold the Dinos off, allowing two third period goals and falling 2-1.
Captain Tim Campbell continues his strong offensive play, leading the 'Horns with three goals and three assists in six games. He also ranks second among Canada West defensemen in points with six. Up front, forward Justin Valentino leads the team in goals with four.
In the crease, newcomer Garret Hughson has started five of the team's six games but senior goalie Damien Ketlo saw his first action of the conference schedule last Saturday and looked solid. Hughson holds a 2.99 goals-against-average (GAA) and a 0.911 save percentage, while Ketlo turned aside 30 shots in the 'Horns 2-1 loss the Dinos.
This weekend only marks the Thunderbirds (2-6-0) second home weekend of the season and they will try to build off a road split in Manitoba last weekend, beating the Bisons 3-2 last Saturday.
After only scoring one goal in their first four games, the T-Birds offence has come to life the past two weekend, scoring 14 goals during that stretch, but the T-Birds have also allowed a conference high 29 goals against in eight contests.
Anthony Bardaro has been the offensive catalyst for UBC, leading the team with four goals and four assists and has had a hand in over half of the team's goals thus far. Austin Verrerl sits second among Thunderbird scorers with three goals and three assists.
While he has only made two starts and seen action in four games, Northern Michigan University transfer Derek Dun has the better numbers of the two goaltenders the T-Birds have used this season. Dun has a sharp 2.14 GAA and a 0.930 save percentage. Matt Hewitt, who was an emergency backup for the Vancouver Canucks two weeks ago, has started the other six games and comes in with a 4.10 GAA and a 0.886 save percentage.
The 'Horns will be on the road again next weekend, travelling to Winnipeg to face the Manitoba Bisons.
