Lethbridge – Every year, the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) honors student athletes who excel in sport at the University level, while maintaining an 80% average in academics, as Academic All-Canadians. This is an outstanding accomplishment considering the amount of time student-athletes commit to training.
The University of Lethbridge and Pronghorns Athletics are pleased to announce that Pronghorn Athletes have set a new high for Academic All-Canadians in a season after 63 of our outstanding student-athletes achieved this honor this past year. The previous year, 46 Pronghorn athletes were named Academic All-Canadians.
These 63 Pronghorns account for more than 30% of the school's eligible varsity athletes achieving this prestigious status.
The university will recognize these outstanding student-athletes at a dinner hosted by University President Dr. Mike Mahon and his wife Maureen on November 22
nd.
"In athletics we can sometimes get too focused on the athlete side of the student athlete," said Sport and Recreation Executive Director Ken McInnes. "Having over 30% of our varsity athletes as Academic All-Canadians is a reflection of how these hard working student athletes, and their Coaches, have challenged themselves and, more importantly, each other to excel academically."
"I am very proud of these student athlete leaders who have achieved Academic All-Canadian status as well as their Coaches who continue to emphasize both the student and the athlete."
"The hosting of the event at the Mahon's home adds that special touch and recognizes the importance of their achievement to the University."
Women's hockey led the way with eight members reaching All-Canadian status, followed closely by men's soccer and women's swim with seven.
The 2015-16 Pronghorn Academic All-Canadians are also recipients of the Deb Steacy AAC Scholarship.
Since the inception of the All-Canadian program in 1990, 912 Pronghorn varsity athletes have been named Academic All-Canadians.
Following is the list of Pronghorn Athletes who are recognized as CIS Academic All Canadians for 2015-16
