Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorns Men's basketball team is coming home from a 1-1 road trip to Winnipeg last weekend, and looking to build some momentum heading into the playoffs.
That should be a mission that gets accomplished, as they take on the Trinity Western Spartans this weekend. The Spartans have had a rough season thus far, going 1-17.
The games, as usual, will commence immediately following the conclusion of the women's games on Friday and Saturday, at roughly 8:00pm and 7:00pm, respectively. The games can be streamed on canadawest.tv.
The 10-8 'Horns will look for two wins to distance themselves from Regina and Winnipeg, who also sit at 10-8.
The 'Horns have the advantage in every key statistical category. Most importantly, they out score the Spartans, 84.4-71.7 in terms of points per game average. They edge them out in shooting percentage, too. Field goals are 46.2% 'Horns, 38.5% Spartans. Three pointers? 36.7% 'Horns, 32.7% Spartans. Rebounds also go to the 'Horns, 38.2-37.6.
The Spartans do take the edge in free tosses, finding success on 71.1% to the 'Horns 70.6%.
The Spartans are led by 3
rd year guard Lucas Mannes, who averages 17.7 points a game. He shoots 37.8% from the field, and 34.8% from the three-point line. He also collects 5.8 rebounds per game.
The 'Horns are led by Australian sensation Brandon Brine, who graduates this year and averages 17.7 points per game, but let's look at the future of the program on this one.
Zac Overwater, just in his second year, averages 9.6 points per game, and shoots 47.7% from the field. The forward can also let go the long ball, and scores on them 38.2% of the time. He averages 3.4 rebound per game. Big shoes left by Brine to fill, but Overwater will certainly help to fill the void Brine leaves.
Not that they needed any more motivation with playoffs coming up, but they will get it this weekend, as Brent Watkins makes his return to Lethbridge after a horrifying accident left him unable to return to the court last July. The guys will definitely be playing for him, in what will be an emotional final weekend of regular season play in Canada West men's basketball.
Next weekend is still a mystery, as the 'Horns could be beginning their playoff run, or enjoying a bye to the quarterfinals. We will have to wait and see how this weekend plays out.
