‘Horns take momentum to Calgary, look to keep rolling with playoffs coming

Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team is headed to Calgary this weekend, to take on the CIS #5 University of Calgary Dinos.

The 'Horns will look to build off of a sweep of their provincial rivals, the Alberta Golden Bears, last weekend, and take that momentum to Calgary. To earn a current two-game win streak, they beat the Golden Bears 93-61 and 88-62 last weekend.

The Dinos are #5 in the country for a reason, and one of those reasons is the fact they are riding an 8 game win streak. Coming off a bye last week, the Dinos, showed Trinity Western who was boss two weekends ago, beating them by scores of 108-86 and 119-75.

The games this weekend at the U of C go at 8:00pm on Friday, and 7:00pm on Saturday. Both are available on canadawest.tv.

The teams are more closely matched than their records indicate. The 12-3 Dinos shoot 42.2% from the field, 36.7% from the three-point line. The Dinos are the top scoring team in Canada West, averaging 86.3 points per game. The 'Horns are actually more efficient than the Dinos, going 46.7% from the field, and 37.9% from downtown. They do come up just short in the points per game category, averaging 85.4.

Those numbers are really too close to call an advantage for either team. And here's the kicker, this weekend is the first time they will meet, so there isn't even a head-to-head to give an edge to either team with.

The Dinos have clinched a playoff spot, but would like to keep their perch atop the Canada West- Pioneer division, so they will be playing some tough basketball. The 'Horns are in a good spot too, sitting in 4th in the Pioneer division, but there are several teams nipping at their heels, so two wins on the weekend would go a long way in creating some breathing room and possibly resting some big names for the playoffs.

The 'Horns' Dejon Burdeaux wasted no time returning from injury last weekend, putting up 31 points in two games. He is on the better side of the 50% mark in shooting efficiency too, going 53.8% from the field and splitting three-pointers right down the middle, going 50.0%. He averages 4.5 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game.

Thomas Cooper, a 4th year guard for the Dinos, is playing out of his mind this season, averaging 24.9 points per game, thanks to his 40.3% average from the field and 40.0% rating from the three-point line. The Chattanooga, Tennessee native also averages 7.8 rebounds per game.

Next weekend, the 'Horns are in Winnipeg to take on the U of W Wesmen.
