Lethbridge – After leading late into the second half, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's rugby team couldn't close out the game and dropped a thrilling 39-33 decision to the Alberta Pandas.
The Pandas scored four tries in the final two minutes to erase a 33-15 Pronghorn lead and snatch a win during the season's opening game.
Savannah Dubien (2), Sara Haring, Jaimie Braybrook, Jayne Isherwood, Alexa Martin, and Ferris Sandboe scored tries for Alberta, while Sarah Farley made two converts for Alberta. Nicole Ronsky, Hailey Driscoll (2), Sevedyn Westrop , and Keegan Brantner scored for Lethbridge, with Abby Neudorf making four converts in the loss.
Alberta controlled the field position game early in the first half, opening the scoring ten minutes in. Haring busted through the 'Horns back-line to record her first try of the season, but Farley was unable to convert, as the Pandas took the early 5-0 lead.
Lethbridge, however, quickly responded, as Ronsky evened the match at five, before Neudorf successfully put Lethbridge ahead with her first convert of the match.
Despite trailing, the home side continued to own possession in the Lethbridge half, but weren't able to score until the 27th minute. Quick ball movement led to an open look on the sideline for Dubien, and she raced past the defenders from 25 yards out for the score.
It would take only four minutes for Lethbridge to regain the lead, as Driscoll found a gap in the Alberta defence, and raced into the end zone from 45 yards out. Another successful convert put the visiting side up 12-10.
Both sides would score tries before the first half was up, with the Pronghorns holding a slight 19-15 lead.
Lethbridge, however, would add to their lead just eight minutes into the second half, as Ronsky was able to bust out another long run into Alberta territory, before feeding Westrop for the score.
Back-to-back defensive stops inside of five yards, as well as a Bratner try in the 76th minute gave Lethbridge a seemingly safe 33-15 lead in the dying minutes. However, the Pandas were able to quickly cut the deficit to 13 with a Braybrook score in the 79th minute.
Dubien would score her second try of the match on the following possession in added time, before Martin completed the astonishing comeback with another Alberta score in added time. A Farley convert gave Alberta a 34-33 advantage. Sandboe sealed the Pandas victory with their fourth try in the final two minutes, as Alberta was able to scrape away the six point win.
Alberta will continue their Canada West season in two weeks, as they travel to Victoria to battle with the Vikes. Lethbridge, meanwhile, will be back in action on October 2nd in Calgary.
