EDMONTON – In the opening leg of the Canada West Rugby Sevens Series the Lethbridge Pronghorns women's rugby team opened day one in Edmonton with two wins and one loss.
"Today has been a good day of rugby for us," said Pronghorns associate coach Ashley Steacy. "Considering we have been training indoor for the last two months, the girls came together and put in some really good performances."
"Our main focus was on building our defensive line and by game three we were realty catching on."
"Offensively, we had come great team tries as well as some exceptional tries, we will be looking to keep the momentum going tomorrow that we've built today."
In game one the Pronghorns got off on the right foot, beating the host Alberta Pandas 26-21. Hailey Driscoll lead the way with two tries, while Caitlin Sears scored one try and kicked three converts. Genna Wright scored the other Pronghorns try.
The second game didn't go as well as the Pronghorns planned, dropping a 40-14 decsion to the Victoria Vikes. Driscoll scored another try, while Brittany Orr scored the Pronghorns second try. Sears and Hannah Lopez each hit their converts.
The Pronghorns wrapped up day one with a dominate performance against the Fraser Valley Cascades, handing the Cascades a 50-0 loss. Carolyn McKee scored three tries to lead the Pronghorns to victory. Brittany Orr score twice and the Pronghorns got tries from Lopez, Sydney De La Mare and Emiola Olalekan. Lopez hit four converts and Sears hit for a convert as well.
The Pronghorns will open day two with a match-up with against the defending Canada West Champion Calgary Dinos, who went 1-2 on day one and wrap up the round robin against the undefeated UBC Thunderbirds.
