Shorthanded Pronghorns drop contest to Bisons

WINNIPEG – Opening 2018 on the road, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team fell behind early and despite a big fourth quarter, dropped their third game of the season, 94-84 to the Manitoba Bisons.
 
The Pronghorns entered the weekend shorthanded, traveling only eight players with leading scorer Dejon Burdeaux, and regulars Awak Piom and Mark Rodehutskors all missing due to injuries.
 
The Bisons started the second half of the season strong with an all-around sturdy showing. They maintained a healthy lead throughout the game, and had a shooting efficiency above 50 per cent for all four quarters.  
 
The Bisons held leads of 29-17 at the end of the first quarter and 55-37 at the half. The Bisons momentum carried into the third quarter, holding a 26 point lead with 10 minutes to play.
 
In the fourth the Pronghorns managed to put up 29 points but the damage was already done.
 
The Bisons are now riding a four-game win streak with an improved 9-4 record, while the Pronghorns fall to 10-3. 
 
Fifth-year guard Justus Alleyn led the charge for the Herd. He put up a total 23 points, nine of which were from the outside. Bisons guard Rashawn Browne also added to the effort, with Browne contributing 19 points of his own. 
 
The Pronghorns' effort was spearheaded by forward Saren Westrop, posting 17 points. His teammate Kyle Peterson was solid on both ends of the court as he recorded six steals and added 13 points. Colton Gibb also chipped in with 16 points.
 
On the night, the Pronghorns finished night shooting 45.7% but turned the ball over 21 times and out-rebounded 37-31. Bisons finished with a 52.9 shooting percentage and team total of seven blocks.
 
The same two teams will hit the floor in Winnipeg tomorrow night to conclude the weekend series. Tip-off is set for 7:00pm CT. Catch all the action on www.canadawest.tv.
