CALGARY – In the final conference game of the Canada West women's rugby season, the Lethbridge Pronghorns fell behind in the open half and dropped a second consecutive decision to the Calgary Dinos, 22-5 Friday afternoon at Encana Field.
With the win, the Dinos improve to 5-1 on the campaign while dropping Lethbridge to 2-4 on the final day of the regular season for both squads. And the result guaranteed they'll face each other again in a week's time, with the 'Horns hosting the 2019 Canada West championship in Lethbridge and entering as the No. 4 seed.
Rookie Julia Omokhuale had a pair of second-half tries for the Dinos, who held the Pronghorns off the scoresheet until the final moments of the game.
There wasn't much to speak of in the game's first 25 minutes, with neither team able to muster any offence. That changed in the 26
th minute when the Dinos were awarded a penalty about 20 yards out, and Patricia Lively made no mistake on her kick to give the Dinos a 3-0 lead. A dozen minutes later, Angie Olukunmi received a pass about 40 yards out and sprinted the width of the field before turning the corner to score Calgary's first try of the day, with Lively adding the convert, and it was 10-0 Dinos at the half.
The Dinos held sustained pressure to open the second half and were rewarded in the 54
th when Omokhuale picked up the ball out of a Calgary scrum and weaved through three defenders to put the Dinos up 17-0 after another Lively convert. And in the 65
th, she added her second as the Calgary scrum pushed all the way across the goal line, leaving Omokhuale to fall on the ball for the score.
The 'Horns finally got on the board in the game's 79
th minute when Gabby Sever broke through the Calgary defence to break the Dinos' shutout bid, and the final score read 22-5 in favour of Calgary.
The 2019 Canada West Rugby Championship goes next Friday and Sunday, Oct. 18-20, at University of Lethbridge Community Stadium. UBC (3-2) will face Victoria (4-1) in one semifinal, with a rematch between the Dinos and Pronghorns in the other. Both semifinal winners will advance to the U SPORTS national championship in Ottawa.
