EDMONTON — Riding an exceptional performance from netminder Alicia Anderson, the Lethbridge Pronghorns clipped the Alberta Pandas 2-1 in Edmonton.
Despite outshooting Lethbridge 42-13, the Pandas lost 2-1 Friday night at Clare Drake Arena, thanks in large part to fifth-year goaltender Alicia Anderson, who made 41 saves for her fourth win of the season.
Third-year forward Kyra Greig and rookie forward Madison Porter scored for the Pronghorns, while fifth-year forward Regan Wright replied for Alberta.
Hallie Oswald made 11 saves to suffer her first loss of the season for the Pandas.
Alberta falls to 4-3 this season, while Lethbridge improves to 5-1.
Alberta got off to a slow start in the opening frame. Lethbridge did a great job clogging up the neutral zone and didn't give the Pandas many opportunities to generate any offence for the first half of the period.
Alberta's power play has been red-hot in the first few weeks of the regular season, but while Anderson deserved her first star honours, the Pronghorns penalty kill units deserved big recognition as they stymied the Pandas power play. Alberta had two five-on-three power plays, and came up empty and finished 0-for-5.
Alberta pumped 18 shots in the second period on Anderson, but the Pandas couldn't capitalize.
Greig opened the scoring at the 9:59 mark of the second period when she ripped a one-timer in the slot past Oswald, on the Pronghorns first shot of the period.
Porter scored her first-career game-winning goal just 30 seconds into the third period to give the Pronghorns a 2-0 lead.
Porter's insurance marker was a tough pill to swallow for Alberta as they were outshooting Lethbridge 30-10 at that point.
Wright would break Anderson's shutout bid with 4:20 remaining, and Alberta continued to press for the tying goal, but Anderson stood tall between the pipes.
Alberta and Lethbridge will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT at Clare Drake Arena.
