Pronghorns and Cougars battle to 1-1 draw

LETHBRIDGE – Trading opening half goals, the Lethbridge Pronghorns and the Regina Cougars battled windy conditions, before settling for a 1-1 draw in Canada West women's soccer action Sunday afternoon.

The tie was the third consecutive 1-1 draw for the Pronghorns, who see their record move to 0-4-5 and are in fight for the final playoff position in the Prairie Division. Following a win over the Mount Royal Cougars yesterday in Calgary, the Cougars unbeaten streak now hits three games and sit with a 3-4-3 record, comfortably in fifth place in the Prairie Division.

The Cougars opened the scoring only seven minutes into the contest, Sydney Langen played a ball through to Kyra Vibert and with Pronghorn keeper Hanna Quinn charging out to challenge, Vibert chipped the ball over Quinn for her first goal of the season.

Pronghorns looked to respond almost immediately, Jesse Dueck sprung midfielder Colette Mofakham off a set piece, Mofakham beat Cougar keeper Kylie Bolton but not the crossbar.

Off another Pronghorn set piece, Dueck let go a shot from 35-yards but Bolton dove to get apiece of the shot and deflected off the right post.

The Pronghorns brought the game back level in the 26th minute. Colette Mofakham shot from the left flank deflected off a body and past a sprawled Bolton for her second goal of the weekend.

At the half, the Pronghorns held an advantage in shot attempts and shots on goal, attempting nine shots with six on goal, while the Cougars had five shot attempts with three finding the target.

Only two minutes into the second half the Pronghorns were awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Jesse Dueck stepped up to take the penalty, aiming high to the left but Bolton guessed right and made a spectacular save to keep the game knotted at one.

With less than two minutes remaining, Cougar Olivia Gables had a great opportunity to break the deadlock from just outside the penalty area, however Quinn made her best save of the afternoon, diving to her right to make the save.

At the final whistle, the Pronghorns held the advantage shot department with 10 shots on goal compared to the Cougars six, while the Cougars attempted seven corners to the Pronghorns four.

The Pronghorns will be back in action next week with potentially three games. The rescheduling of the October 1st cancelled game versus Alberta is tentatively booked for next Wednesday, followed by a home-and-home weekend set with the Mount Royal Cougars.  Regina will also face a home-and-home series with provincial rival Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend.
