LETHBRIDGE – In a clash of two nationally ranked rivals, the #8 ranked Calgary Dinos withstood everything that the #9 Lethbridge Pronghorns could throw at them in hostile territory, coming away with a 27-17 win in a back-and-forth affair.
With the win the Dinos improve to 3-1-0 on the season, while the Pronghorns drop to 1-1.
Off the opening kick, the two-time defending conference champion Calgary Dinos pushed the Pronghorns back and into their own end. Despite solid defending and forcing turnovers, the Pronghorns were not able to keep the Dinos out of endzone for long.
Following a Pronghorn knock-on, Laura Petrillo was the beneficiary of the Dinos moving the ball out wide and scored the first try of the game just past the six-minute mark.
The Pronghorns responded right in the 14
th minute mark. Following a strong push, the Pronghorns had the Dinos deep in their own end and a slick kick into the endzone by Caitlin Sears sprung Hailey Driscoll. Driscoll was able to outrace a Dinos for the bouncing ball and touch down the try to tie the game at five.
Back and forth the two teams went again, trading scoring plays. After the Pronghorns defence was able to hold up the Dinos in the endzone, the Dinos scrum was able to maintain possession and first-year Julia Omokhuale was able to put the Dinos back in front. Beryln Seselja hit the conversion to put the Dinos up 12-5.
Once again, the Pronghorns responded right back, scoring a unconverted try. Rebecca Powell was able to spring Driscoll for her second try of the half but once again the Dinos had an answer.
Beryln Seselja was able to breakthrough the Pronghorns line and push the Dinos lead to 17-10, the lead Calgary would take into half.
Seven minutes into the second half, Calgary increased their lead to 22-10. Substitute Kate Knight turned the corner and didn't look back, racing to score the Dinos fourth try of the game.
As the theme was all night, the Pronghorns responded to the Dinos try and cut the deficit back to five points. First-year back Rebecca Powell received a timely off load from Caitlin Sears and raced away to score her first career Canada West try. Sears made the convert to make the score 22-17 with 16 minutes remaining.
Once again, the Dinos had an answer, sealing the victory with a try six minutes short of full time. Pushing towards the goal line, the Dinos pack was able to knock the Pronghorns off the line and Cassidy Jones was credited with the unconverted try.
The task doesn't get any easier for the Pronghorns as they head out on the road next weekend to face Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds. The Calgary Dinos will go to Edmonton next Sunday to face the Alberta Pandas.
